We are seeking an experienced Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to play a pivotal role in the development of innovative electromechanical and power generation technologies for next-generation aerospace applications. This role is ideal for a technically strong engineer who enjoys design authority, work-package leadership and hands-on problem solving, while also mentoring others and influencing project direction.

The Role

  • You will lead and deliver robust mechanical design solutions across R&D, R&T and product development programmes.
  • Working within a multi-disciplinary engineering environment, you will take ownership of complex work packages, ensuring designs meet performance, manufacturing, cost and weight targets while complying with rigorous aerospace standards.
  • You’ll work closely with stress, thermal, validation, industrialisation, quality and supply chain teams, providing technical leadership and design assurance from concept through to product maturity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of mechanical design solutions for electromechanical and power generation products.
  • Own and deliver engineering work packages, ensuring technical robustness, schedule adherence and cost targets.
  • Create, review and approve 3D CAD models, drawings and bills of materials in line with company standards.
  • Produce and review design assurance documentation, including calculations, reports, test procedures and analyses.
  • Support design investigations, root-cause analysis and risk reduction activities to mature products and concepts.
  • Act as a technical authority, supporting design reviews and approving solutions produced by other engineers.
  • Interface across disciplines including mechanical, stress, thermal, V&V, industrialisation, configuration and quality.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentoring and informal leadership to engineers within the project team.
  • Support project reporting, milestone delivery and KPI achievement.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical, Automotive or Aeronautical Engineering (or equivalent experience).
  • Strong experience delivering mechanical design work packages in a regulated engineering environment.
  • Proven background in rotating machinery (shafts, bearings, seals, housings, structures).
  • Solid understanding of engineering materials and manufacturing methods.
  • Substantial experience using 3D CAD tools for electromechanical design.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to plan, prioritise and deliver work under tight project deadlines.
  • Experience with high-speed motors or power generation systems.
  • Familiarity with CATIA or NX, PLM systems (Teamcenter/Windchill), SAP or MS Project.
  • Basic knowledge of mechatronics or electronics.
  • Experience working with external engineering suppliers and reviewing outsourced deliverables.
