About the Role: We are seeking a confident and commercially minded Onboarding & Risk (Underwriting) Specialist to join our growing global Compliance and Risk team. This role sits at the heart of our high-risk ecommerce acquiring business and plays a critical role in enabling safe, scalable growth across our payment platform. You will take ownership of the end-to-end underwriting and onboarding of ecommerce merchants, applying a risk-based, judgment-led approach rather than a purely checklist-driven model. This is an ideal role for a strong decision-maker who is comfortable working independently, assessing incomplete or imperfect information, and balancing risk with commercial opportunity. You'll work closely with internal stakeholders and external acquiring partners, operating with a high degree of autonomy and accountability. Previous experience in the adult/dating underwriting sector is a strong advantage.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform risk-based underwriting reviews of new and existing merchants in line with internal policies, regulatory requirements, and card scheme rules.
- Conduct comprehensive merchant website and business model reviews within high-risk ecommerce verticals, particularly adult/dating.
- Complete CDD, EDD, ODD, and AML assessments, including PEP and sanctions screening using internal and third-party tools.
- Apply sound judgment to identify, assess, and mitigate financial, operational, and reputational risk.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and up-to-date KYB records across the merchant lifecycle.
- Act as a key point of contact for Account Managers, proactively guiding them on compliance, risk requirements, and documentation needs.
- Liaise with acquiring partners on onboarding queries, account changes, and merchant exits.
- Review daily exception and monitoring reports, investigating anomalies and escalating issues where appropriate.
- Contribute to ongoing improvements in underwriting frameworks, tools, and processes.
- Support and coach colleagues by sharing underwriting knowledge and best practices.
- Undertake ad-hoc projects and risk initiatives as the business evolves.
What We're Looking For:
- 3+ years' experience in ecommerce merchant acquiring or underwriting within a high-risk environment (experience in adult and/or dating is highly desirable).
- Credit risk or financial analysis experience is a strong asset.
- Proven ability to make independent, risk-based decisions with confidence and accountability.
- Strong understanding of card scheme rules, merchant acquiring risk concepts, and onboarding requirements.
- Solid working knowledge of CDD, AML, and financial crime controls.
- Commercially aware, able to balance risk mitigation with business enablement.
- Analytical thinker with strong attention to detail and sound investigative skills.
- Comfortable working with minimal oversight in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Strong systems literacy; SQL Server or data analysis experience is a plus.
- Willingness to travel occasionally if required.
Why Join Us?
- High-impact role with real decision-making authority.
- Exposure to complex, global high-risk ecommerce models.
- Collaborative, international team with a pragmatic and mature compliance and risk culture.
- Opportunity to shape underwriting approaches and influence risk strategy.
- Flexible working arrangements and a strong emphasis on trust and ownership.
