Overview
This role is within the Strategic Research Group (SRG), a team of Data Science, Machine Learning and AI specialists who develop novel AI solutions to mission‑focused problems.
You will be responsible for the technical development of AI/ML projects, working alongside more senior members, supporting projects from initial idea scoping right through to final project delivery in both customer and internal domains.
You will demonstrate novel thinking, propose new ideas for solving challenging problems and communicate these ideas effectively to senior technical leaders to influence the technical direction of your projects.
Responsibilities
- Develop novel data science solutions, contributing significantly to machine learning projects as part of a team, with guidance from seniors.
- Bring experience in developing and delivering data‑centric solutions.
- Undertake research and applied AI/ML tasks on customer and internal research projects.
- Work with autonomy on assigned tasks within project groups.
- Generate ideas for new research directions.
- Deliver AI/ML/data‑science solutions to a broad range of defence problems.
- Work with senior group members, customers and stakeholders to determine technical approaches and carry out the required development.
- Present and demonstrate work internally and to senior stakeholders, adapting to audiences of varying technical expertise.
Skills & Experience
Essential
- BSc in Machine Learning, Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics or a related field.
- Experience coding in Python and associated ML packages (Hugging Face, Tensor Flow, Py Torch).
- Experience delivering ML solutions to stakeholders.
- Good understanding of AI/ML algorithms for different data types and tasks, including Generative AI, NLP and computer vision, sufficient to undertake research beyond existing literature with some support.
- Experience training and developing AI models including Large Language Models.
- Ability to produce high‑quality scientific writing for internal and external publication.
- Problem‑solving with high levels of autonomy, with input from technical leaders.
- Self‑starter, proactive in finding solutions.
Desirable
- Ph D or Master’s degree with experience in academic research.
- Experience using robust ML pipelines, appropriate version control and environment management (e. g., venvs or Docker).
- Working knowledge of Linux systems, basic command‑line functionality (e. g., AWS CLI, Docker CLI, ssh, ls, cd).
- Experience working in cloud, especially AWS, with equivalents such as GCP or Azure.
- Peer‑reviewed research publications.
- Comfortable following agile processes for project delivery.
- Experience delivering AI/ML projects in defence or government.
