What Is an Environmental, Health & Safety Champion?
EHS Champions lead by example. They promote safe working practices, support a positive safety culture, and genuinely care about the wellbeing of their colleagues.
Champions:
- Follow and promote safe working practices
- Support continuous improvement ideas
- Help identify and manage risks and hazards
- Work closely with management to uphold EHS policies
Responsibilities
The EHS Champion role is completely voluntary and flexible. Your day job will always remain your first priority — how much you get involved is entirely up to you. Some champions take the reins and really run with the role, getting involved in projects, ideas and new initiatives. Others simply support when they can or focus on smaller tasks within their own area. Both approaches are absolutely fine. The goal is to have eyes and ears across the business, and to involve the people who know the work best.
As a Champion, you’ll get early access to new ideas, safe ways of working and upcoming initiatives. You can help shape these if you want to or simply share updates with your team. You’ll also join a fantastic network of colleagues from across EMEA — a great way to build connections, learn from others and grow your own professional support network.
Here are some of the things you can get involved in (but none are mandatory):
- Taking part in monthly EHS Committee meetings and bimonthly Champion meetings
- Supporting ISO 14001 & ISO 45001 internal and external audits
- Carrying out area‑specific EHS checks, such as:
- Monthly audits
- Supporting risk assessments
- COSHH checks
- Environmental checks
Benefits of Becoming a Champion
This voluntary role offers training, hands-on experience and opportunities that support personal development and future career progression. As a Champion, you will gain:
- Understanding of KPI use and performance improvement
- Experience working across departments
- Opportunities to communicate improvements to wider teams
- Problem‑solving skills through root-cause and corrective‑action methods
- Exposure to Ishida’s leadership team
- Insight into organisational EHS requirements
- Auditing skills and techniques
- IOSH-accredited EHS training
- Ongoing coaching and support from the EHS team
