A major earthworks contractor is looking to appoint a Commercial Manager to lead the commercial function across large-scale bulk earthworks and infrastructure projects. This role would suit an experienced commercial professional with a strong contractor-side background in earthworks, heavy civils, infrastructure or major enabling works, who is comfortable taking ownership of commercial performance across live projects, leading teams, managing risk, and protecting margin in delivery-focused environments. The role sits within a specialist earthworks business delivering bulk excavation, fill, capping, soil treatment, stabilisation and restoration packages on nationally significant infrastructure schemes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the commercial management of assigned projects from contract award through to final account
  • Take ownership of project commercial performance, including cost control, forecasting, CVRs, cash flow and margin protection
  • Manage change control, compensation events, variations, notices and commercial correspondence
  • Lead subcontract procurement, subcontractor administration, valuations, payment assessments and final accounts
  • Work closely with operational teams to identify risk, opportunity, productivity issues and entitlement
  • Ensure robust cost capture across plant, labour, materials, haulage, disposal and subcontract packages
  • Oversee commercial reporting and present project position to senior leadership
  • Support dispute avoidance and commercial resolution with clients, consultants and subcontractors
  • Lead and develop project QS and commercial teams
  • Ensure commercial processes align with project programme, site delivery and contractual obligations

Requirements

  • Strong experience in a Commercial Manager or Senior Quantity Surveyor role within earthworks, heavy civils, infrastructure or major enabling works
  • Good working knowledge of NEC and/or other infrastructure contract forms
  • Strong understanding of bulk earthworks commercial drivers including haulage, disposal, re-use, material balance, productivity and plant utilisation
  • Experience managing commercial teams on live contractor-led projects
  • Strong subcontractor management, forecasting and financial reporting capability
  • Able to work closely with site and operational teams in a delivery-led environment
  • Good communication and leadership skills
  • Full UK driving licence
