Job description

The SIA is an executive non‑departmental public body sponsored by the Home Office, set up in 2004 to regulate certain activities in the private security industry.

Currently, we employ nearly 400 members of staff.

We are operationally independent of government.

We are now preparing to take on new responsibilities as the regulator of Martyn’s Law – named after Martyn Hett, one of the 22 people who tragically died on 22 May 2017 in the terrorist attack on Manchester Arena.

Martyn’s Law, introduced by the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, is intended to improve protective security and preparedness at premises and events across the UK.

The new Act will require premises in scope to be prepared to keep people safe in the event of an attack.

Certain larger premises and events will also need to take steps to reduce their vulnerability to acts of terrorism.

Martyn’s Law is primarily a civil, regulatory regime.

We will regulate supportively and proportionately but robustly.

The SIA will have new guidance, investigatory and inspection functions and a range of new powers and sanctions.

Our new Martyn’s Law functions will sit alongside and complement our existing responsibility for regulating the private security industry.

We’re looking for an experienced regulatory professional who combines strong analytical skills with sound judgement, leadership capability, and a passion for improving compliance outcomes.

In this role, you’ll lead the assessment of complex and high‑risk cases, provide expert advice on protective security and regulatory compliance, and help develop the systems, processes, and people that underpin a high‑performing assessment function.

You’ll oversee assessment prioritisation, manage complex casework from initial review through to final determination, and ensure evidence‑based decisions are delivered consistently, transparently, and efficiently.

Working closely with regulated premises, industry stakeholders, inspectors, and internal colleagues, you’ll play a key role in identifying emerging risks, driving continuous improvement, and embedding best practice across the organisation.

As a recognised subject‑matter expert, you’ll also help shape regulatory policy and operational delivery, providing guidance, mentoring colleagues, and building capability across the wider team.

Essential

  • Experience working in regulatory environments and operating in accordance with regulatory and policy frameworks
  • Experience working in safety‑related environments or in the effective assessment or delivery of safety management systems.
  • Knowledge of protective security principles and recognised good practice, with the ability to apply these in a compliance‑focused context.
  • Ability to review, assess, and interpret documents with accuracy, consistency, and sound judgement
  • Strong attention to detail, with experience operating in environments requiring high levels of accuracy and precision.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly, persuasively, and appropriately to a range of audiences.
  • Experience in engaging with regulated communities or private security industry stakeholders and managing relationships with complex stakeholders.
  • Strong organisational and time‑management skills, with the ability to deliver work effectively within time‑pressed or high‑demand environments.
  • Competence in the effective management, organisation, and quality assurance of documents, information, and evidence.
  • Ability to objectively evaluate evidence and exercise critical thinking to inform balanced, robust, and transparent decisions.
  • Experience conducting remote/online interviews or structured information gathering activities to support compliance assessment, evidence gathering, and/or regulatory inspections.
  • Experience managing and prioritising multiple active cases, ensuring effective risk management and informed decision‑making across all casework activities.
  • Experience of using Microsoft Office packages

Desirable

  • Demonstrable experience of working with protective security principles and recognised good practice, with the ability to apply these in a compliance‑focused context.
  • Experience coordinating work across teams and contributing to the delivery of shared objectives within a collaborative environment.
  • Experience evaluating and assessing compliance against regulatory, statutory, or other defined frameworks, applying consistent and evidence‑based judgement.

Alongside your salary of £38,401, Security Industry Authority contributes £11,124 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.
