The Challenge

More than 1 in 4 adults in the UK are living with obesity; a chronic condition that often negatively impacts their physical and mental health, and therefore quality of life. Access to specialist weight management services for the treatment of obesity remains limited and varies geographically due to a lack of funding. Existing services face long waiting lists, resulting in treatment delays which can adversely affect patient outcomes.

Enter Second Nature... By bringing together the latest behavioural science, psychology, technology, and the talents of our incredible team, our mission is to eradicate obesity and type 2 diabetes for all, and as part of that mission, we are aiming to increase access to effective treatment for people living with obesity. Second Nature provides specialist weight management services to support people living with obesity.

We are looking for a Bank Assessment Specialist to join our multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to support our patient assessment process. This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in the growth of specialist weight management services in a fast-paced, startup environment.

The role:

We are looking to add a dedicated Assessment Specialist to our bank staff, as part of our Specialist Weight Management Service (SWMS), in response to increased service demand. This is currently a 3-month fixed-term bank contract, with the potential to extend subject to service needs.

Flexible Working to Suit Your Life

This opportunity is ideal for those looking to enjoy the flexibility of bank work:

  • Work from anywhere in the UK within our operational hours (8am - 8pm, Monday to Thursday; 8am - 6pm on Friday; potential weekend hours).
  • Choose from a minimum of five hours per week up to 25 hours, with the freedom to manage your own schedule.

The primary focus of this role will be to conduct assessments for patients entering our service. Assessments are delivered via video call and involve gathering comprehensive patient information to inform clinical decision-making and identify the most appropriate intervention pathway. Where required, some assessments will also include risk assessments for suicidal ideation/self-harm.

You will be working as part of an innovative multi-disciplinary team (MDT), which includes doctors, dietitians, psychologists, and physical activity specialists — all with expertise in obesity. This is a flexible, part-time opportunity with immediate start, ideal for anyone interested in supporting a high-demand service and making a meaningful impact, while gaining experience in an innovative startup environment. Although this is a temporary position, you will have access to clinical supervision and support from a Practitioner Psychologist.

What you'll do:

  • Independently assess patients for intervention pathways within our specialist weight management service.
  • Create individual formulations based on initial screening and assessment, drawing on your own clinical expertise within weight management/eating disorders, psychological theory, current research, and relevant guidelines, e.g. NICE.
  • Attend regular MDT and supervision meetings to discuss assessments.
  • Appropriately manage clinical risk (e.g. safeguarding concerns) when it arises during assessments.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information in line with the requirements of the Data Protection Act and ensuring that participant confidentiality is protected at all times.

You have experience working in a weight management/bariatric/eating disorder/mental health setting. Experience of conducting initial assessments and consultations to determine intervention pathway, including risk assessments for suicidal ideation/self-harm. A solid understanding of obesity as a condition and the issues many people living with obesity face including weight stigma.

You can work autonomously and collaboratively with a doctor-led disciplinary team (MDT) to ensure patients are correctly assessed and allocated to intervention pathways. You’ll confidently and independently manage a caseload of patients for assessment, elevate relevant issues to, and work collaboratively with, our MDT.

You are dynamic and have a strong drive to work in an innovative digital healthcare service. Excited by a fast-paced startup environment which requires you to be dynamic and hands-on, adapting your role to the needs of the service. You're confident in using technology to provide patient care, including recording and reviewing patient notes. Excited by digital initiatives that increase access to healthcare.

Work from home with flexible hours to fit around your lifestyle. Joining a culture of intelligent, friendly, and highly-motivated individuals who’re passionate about what they do. A competitive market salary. Fully paid line management and clinical supervision, ensuring you have regular support and professional growth. Training and development opportunities.
