About us
Seccl is the Octopus-owned embedded investment platform that’s on a mission to helping more people to invest – and invest well. We’re B-Corp certified with an amazing product-market fit, impressive early traction and the potential to transform an outdated industry, for the better. We've been growing fast and will scale even faster over the next few years. We’re also proud to be part of Octopus, the £multi billion group that's on a mission to breathe new life into broken industries, through companies like Octopus Energy, Octopus Investments and Octopus Money.
The role
We’re looking for a commercially-minded Legal Counsel (from NQ level onwards) to join our legal team, reporting directly to the General Counsel. This is an opportunity for a solicitor who enjoys working autonomously, taking ownership of legal matters and partnering with colleagues across the business to deliver practical outcomes. You’ll help support a company transforming the wealth tech sector, providing clear and usable legal advice that enables innovation while appropriately managing risk. The successful candidate will be comfortable operating with minimal supervision, quickly identifying the key issues and communicating legal advice in a way that engages non-legal stakeholders.
If you thrive on turning complexity into clarity, and love building processes that scale, this could be your perfect next move.
On a typical day you will…
- Provide pragmatic legal advice to support the day-to-day running of the Seccl business.
- Advise on a broad range of legal matters including financial services regulation, contract law, pensions law, data protection, employment law and intellectual property rights.
- Draft, review and negotiate commercial contracts with suppliers, client firms, customers and other third parties.
- Partner with product, technology, operations and commercial teams on strategic initiatives and new propositions.
- Identify and manage legal risks while supporting business growth and innovation.
- Support corporate governance and company secretarial activities where required.
- Managing external counsel when appropriate.
- Develop practical legal processes, templates and guidance that scale with the business.
This role’s for you if...
- You are a qualified solicitor in England and Wales or Scotland, with experience gained in private practice, in-house, or both.
- You are comfortable working independently.
- You can provide solutions that balance legal risk with practical business outcomes.
- You are confident using technology to work efficiently and improve legal processes.
- You can get to the point quickly and explain legal concepts in a clear, concise and commercial way.
- You enjoy building relationships and influencing decision-making across non-legal teams.
- You have excellent drafting, negotiation and stakeholder management skills.
- You thrive in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment.
This role isn’t for you if...
- You rely on a lot of top-down direction.
- You’re not comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
- You struggle to follow through on ideas.
- You don’t like change.
What’s in it for you…
- A salary between £65,000 and £75,000 – dependant on experience + reviewed annually.
- 27 days holiday + bank holidays (some can be flexible) + day off on your birthday + three days (full time) per year for Dependant leave.
- Two volunteering days per year.
- Option to work abroad for up to six weeks a year.
- Secclbrate - our recognition programme that offers a mix of flexible rewards including extra pay, additional holiday and increased learning budget.
- Length of service award – one month paid sabbatical at eight years.
- 6% employer pension contribution, and life assurance.
- Private medical insurance with AXA Health.
- Enhanced Parental leave.
- MacBook and up to £500 home office set up budget.
- £750 per person learning budget.
- Health and wellbeing initiatives including free therapy via Wellness Cloud, mental health support via Headspace.
- Strong financial wellbeing focus including access to Octopus Money, Octopus Share Incentive Plan and will writing offering via Octopus Legacy.
- Perkbox – Flexi-points giving you a range of discounts and perks including free weekly coffee, gym and retail discounts.
- Access to initiatives like Cycle to Work and Octopus Electric Vehicle Leasing.
