We are pleased to announce the opportunity for experienced paramedics to apply for the developmental role of Trainee Advanced Paramedic Practitioner (Urgent and Emergency Care). As an advancing practice role in Urgent and Emergency Care, you will undertake a broad programme of education and professional development jointly delivered by South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, City St. Georges University of London, and Kent, Surrey and Sussex Primary Care Department.
This developmental programme involves a range of clinical practice placements and a 3 year academic pathway culminating in an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice (accredited by NHS England Centre for Advancing Practice). Through undertaking this programme, the Trainee Advanced Paramedic Practitioner (Urgent and Emergency Care) will be supported to enhance their knowledge, skills, and critical thinking to develop expertise in urgent and emergency care. This role will require flexibility in adopting new ways of working to embrace the four pillars of advanced practice.
The Trainee Advanced Paramedic Practitioner (Urgent and Emergency Care) role commences at Band 6 (plus relevant unsocial hours payments) with uplift to Band 7 on commencement of year 3 of the programme. Please state within your application which location(s) you wish to be considered for.
Main duties of the job- Clinical Practice: Deliver advanced clinical assessment, diagnosis and management of individuals with undifferentiated, complex and high-risk presentations across urgent and emergency care settings.
- Leadership and Management: Provide senior clinical leadership and decision support within urgent and emergency care environments, influencing clinical practice, patient pathways and service delivery across the ambulance service and wider health system.
- Education: Act as a senior educator and professional role model, providing supervision, coaching and education to develop clinical capability.
- Research: Contribute to and apply research, audit, evaluation and quality improvement to enhance patient outcomes, service effectiveness and evidence-informed urgent and emergency care practice.
As a Trainee Advanced Paramedic Practitioner, you will progress through a 3 year developmental programme converting theory into practice whilst supported by an allocated supervisor. This role involves a varied job plan, including 40% of your time working on an Advanced Paramedic Practitioner single response vehicle providing operational urgent and emergency care, 40% of your time working in an Urgent Care Hub providing remote clinical assessment, advice, and support to staff and patients, and 20% of your working time undertaking professional leadership activities such as clinical supervision, education and research. It is a requirement of the role that you are able to fulfil all elements.
Successful applicants will need to meet academic entry requirements of City St Georges University, London. You will be required to demonstrate excellent clinical competence and patient care, robust communication skills, a forward thinking and positive approach, ability to study at level 7 and a commitment to complete the 3 year educational pathway. Less than full time hours may be considered, but it is a requirement of the post that the candidate will be able to undertake a minimum of 30 hours per week.
Person SpecificationQualifications
- Degree (2.2 or above) in Paramedic Science or related subject OR as a MINIMUM, completion of a Diploma of Higher Education (DipHE) and one of the following completed within the last five years: 1) successful completion of a standalone module at level M OR 2) a minimum of 30 credits from standalone modules at level 6, at or above grade B (60%).

Experience
- Significant experience of clinical practice (equivalent to at least four years post-registration experience in urgent and/or emergency care)
- Evidence of understanding advancing practice

- Demonstrable experience of working in pre-hospital care within an NHS ambulance environment or similar
- Demonstrates leadership in practice
- Experience of delivering or facilitating education
- Experience of undertaking or participating in research, service evaluation or audit
- Experience of undertaking remote consultations or provision of remote healthcare advice
This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
Salary: £38,682 to £54,710 a year. Commences at Band 6. Uplift to Band 7 at start of year 3.
