THE APPLICATION SUPPORT ENGINEER ROLE:
This is a highly technical support role suited to someone who enjoys getting under the bonnet of complex systems and databases. A significant proportion of the role centres around investigating application issues through SQL Server, database analysis, stored procedure reviews, and deep dives into database structures where documentation is often limited. You'll be responsible for diagnosing and resolving application issues, writing bespoke SQL queries and reports, performing data modifications and bulk imports, supporting release and change management activities, and assisting with the setup of new client and demonstration environments. The successful candidate will be comfortable reverse engineering systems, understanding complex database relationships, and confidently navigating large SQL Server environments without extensive documentation. You'll work closely with internal stakeholders and customers, supporting critical business systems whilst helping to improve processes, performance, and reliability across the wider application estate.
APPLICATION SUPPORT ENGINEER ESSENTIAL SKILLS
- Strong commercial SQL Server experience
- Ability to write complex SQL queries from scratch
- Experience investigating issues through database analysis, application logs, and stored procedures
- Strong understanding of SQL joins, aggregations, subqueries, pivots, and temporary tables
- Experience modifying data and performing bulk imports using CSV and spreadsheet-based data sources
- Ability to navigate and understand complex database schemas with limited documentation
- Experience supporting business-critical applications in a commercial environment
- Knowledge of release management and change control processes
- Understanding of point-in-time backups and database restore processes
- Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Experience working with legacy systems and complex technical environments
- Strong communication skills with the ability to support stakeholders and demonstrate systems
