Role based in Paddington, London. Salary up to £100,000, depending on experience. Senior, hands-on role owning Drive-by-Wire (DBW) and AV hardware integration. Key technical position within a cutting-edge autonomy & robotics engineering team.

ABOUT THE CLIENT

Due to continued growth, we’re supporting a highly technical organisation operating at the forefront of autonomous and industrial vehicle systems. The company develops production-grade autonomy platforms, combining advanced hardware integration, embedded control, and safety-critical systems deployed in real-world environments. They are engineering-led, quality-driven, and focused on building reliable, scalable autonomous solutions rather than research prototypes.

THE SENIOR MECHATRONICS ENGINEER ROLE

As a Senior Mechatronics Engineer, you’ll take end-to-end ownership of Drive-by-Wire systems and autonomous vehicle hardware integration across industrial and autonomous platforms. This is a highly hands-on, system-level role bridging mechanical systems, vehicle electronics, embedded control, and autonomy hardware. You’ll lead vehicle bring-up, integration, commissioning, and validation activities, ensuring systems are safe, reliable, and ready for real-world operation. You’ll work closely with autonomy, perception, and software teams while acting as a senior technical authority on DBW and AV integration.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Own integration and validation of Drive-by-Wire systems (steering, braking, propulsion, auxiliary actuation).
  • Lead AV hardware kit integration including compute, sensors (LiDAR, radar, cameras, GNSS/IMU), networking, and power.
  • Plan and execute SIL / HIL / VIL and on-vehicle testing.
  • Diagnose complex system-level issues during vehicle bring-up and commissioning.
  • Support functional safety concepts including fail-safe behaviour, redundancy, and degradation strategies.
  • Maintain strong awareness of DBW components, ECUs, and AV hardware ecosystems.
  • Produce clear, audit-ready technical documentation and integration evidence.
  • Act as a senior technical mentor within the engineering team.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

  • Degree in Mechatronics, Automotive, Robotics, Mechanical, Electrical, or Control Engineering.
  • 5+ years’ experience in mechatronics, vehicle systems integration, robotics, or autonomous platforms.
  • Hands-on experience with Drive-by-Wire or vehicle actuation systems.
  • Proven experience integrating AV hardware kits (sensors, compute, networking, power).
  • Strong understanding of vehicle dynamics, actuators, and control systems.
  • Experience across SIL / HIL / VIL / vehicle testing.
  • Familiarity with CAN, Ethernet, EtherCAT or similar protocols.
  • Good working knowledge of C++ and Python in embedded or control environments.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 26262 and/or SOTIF.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE

  • Autonomous vehicles, ADAS, mobile robotics, or industrial automation.
  • OEM, Tier-1 supplier, or AV hardware vendor experience.
  • Fault-tolerant and redundant system architectures.
  • Exposure to ROS / ROS2, embedded Linux, or controller programming (e.g. CoDeSys).
