A leading global technology and consulting organisation delivering large-scale digital transformation programmes across the UK Public Sector is seeking an experienced Data Engineer to join a strategic HMRC programme supporting the continued expansion of the Minerva Platform. The Minerva Platform is one of HMRC's flagship SAS-based data and analytics solutions, designed to industrialise the identification and risking of tax-related activities.
As the platform expands to support new HMRC initiatives and services, this role will be instrumental in delivering robust and scalable data integration capabilities. This is an excellent opportunity to work on high-profile government programmes including Making Tax Digital (MTD), Income Tax Self-Assessment (ITSA), VAT Repayment Risking, and Agent Registration Risking initiatives.
As a Data Engineer, you will join the Minerva Data Acquisition Team, responsible for ingesting, transforming, and integrating data from a wide range of HMRC data sources into the Minerva Platform. You will lead the design and development of data integration solutions using Pentaho, Talend, Denodo, and SAS, ensuring high-quality, scalable, and secure data pipelines are delivered to support business intelligence, analytics, and risk assessment capabilities.
Working closely with architects, engineers, analysts, and business stakeholders, you will help define technical solutions, drive Agile delivery practices, and contribute to the ongoing evolution of one of HMRC's most strategically important data platforms. The role will also involve promoting DevOps best practices, supporting CI/CD delivery pipelines, troubleshooting complex data challenges, and contributing to data governance and quality initiatives.
Essential Skills:
- Strong Data Engineering experience within enterprise-scale environments
- Expertise with ETL tools including Pentaho and Talend
- Experience using Denodo for data virtualisation
- Strong SAS experience for data analytics and reporting
- Strong SQL and data modelling skills
- Experience designing and implementing scalable data pipelines
- Understanding of data integration, transformation, and ingestion frameworks
- Experience working within Agile and Scrum delivery environments
- Hands-on experience with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines
- Experience with tools such as Git, Jenkins, Docker, and Kubernetes
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
- Ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Experience mentoring or supporting other engineers desirable
- Active SC Clearance required
