We're working with a fast-growing, high-performing technical consultancy seeking an experienced Data Engineer to join a team specialising in data, AI and software solutions across Defence and financial services. Headquartered in Newcastle, the business brings together high-calibre technical talent to solve complex problems in demanding environments. They have a growing international footprint and are building a team of engineers working on cutting-edge technology for Defence and National Security.
The Role
You'll play a key role in building the data foundations that Defence programmes depend on, working across projects ranging from production data pipelines and applications to POCs and making sensitive or hard-to-reach data usable in operational environments. This is a hands-on role with exposure across the data engineering stack and the opportunity to work on technically challenging, real-world problems.
Responsibilities
- Design and build data-intensive applications and pipelines, from ingestion through to consumption
- Test, troubleshoot and improve data quality, reliability and performance
- Provide technical expertise across projects and client engagements
- Work flexibly across evolving project requirements
- Collaborate with engineers and share technical knowledge
What We're Looking For
- Experience designing and building data-intensive applications and pipelines
- Strong programming skills in Python and SQL or similar
- Experience with technologies such as Spark, Databricks, AWS, Azure, GCP and/or Airflow
- Strong focus on data quality, testing and reliability
- Solid software engineering fundamentals and high engineering standards
- Strong communication and collaborative skills
- Comfortable working with ambiguity while remaining outcome-focused
- 1st or 2:1 degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Physics or related discipline
- Defence/National Security experience advantageous

Consultancy & Travel
The role involves working with Defence clients across the UK, with assignments potentially requiring 2–3 days per week on client site or shorter periods of full-time travel. Client locations can include Cheltenham, Bristol, Glasgow, Portsmouth and other UK Defence hubs, with full travel expenses and hotel accommodation provided.
