Search Consultancy is currently recruiting for an experienced MIG Welder specialising in structural steel to join a well‑established fabrication facility in Newcastle. This is a long‑term position offering excellent stability, with a direct path from temporary to permanent employment for the right candidate.
We are looking for a high‑caliber professional capable of delivering structural‑grade welds safely, efficiently, and to exact technical specifications.
Shift Patterns & Earning Potential
- Option 1: Night Shift
Schedule: 4 Nights per week (12‑hour shifts)
Benefit: Includes a premium shift uplift rate for unsociable hours. - Option 2: Day Shift
Schedule: 5 Days per week (Standard 42‑hour working week)
Key Responsibilities
- MIG Welding: Executing high-quality MIG (GMAW) welding on heavy structural steel components, including beams, columns, trusses, and plates.
- Technical Blueprint Reading: Interpreting engineering drawings, weld symbols, and fabrication plans to assemble and weld components accurately.
- Multi‑Position Welding: Conducting multi‑run fillet and butt welds in various positions to structural standards (e.g., BS EN ISO 9606‑1 or AWS D1.1).
- Fabrication & Prep: Tacking up assemblies, checking alignments against tolerances, and prepping materials (grinding, beveling) prior to welding.
- Quality Assurance: Conducting visual inspections of completed welds to ensure zero defects, cracks, or porosity before passing to final inspection.
- Safety & Maintenance: Operating heavy fabrication machinery safely, managing gas and wire consumables efficiently, and maintaining a clean bay.
Requirements
- CSCS Card: A valid Blue (Skilled Worker) or Gold (Advanced Craft/Supervisor) CSCS card is required.
- Experience: Proven track record as a MIG welder working specifically with heavy structural steel.
- Qualifications: Time‑served or relevant NVQ/City & Guilds qualifications. Prior or current weld codings (e.g., 3G, 4G) are highly advantageous.
- Tools & PPE: Your own standard welding kit (including a responsive auto‑darkening mask, chipping hammer, and gauntlets) and 5‑point site PPE.
- Reliability: A punctual, professional approach to long‑term shift work.
