Role Purpose
We are seeking an experienced and ambitious Principal Design Engineer to join a growing Building Services consultancy. This is an excellent opportunity for a senior–level engineer looking to lead the design and delivery of complex projects across commercial, residential, healthcare, education, industrial, and mixed–use developments.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design and delivery of building services projects from concept through to completion.
- Manage multidisciplinary engineering teams and coordinate with architects, contractors, and external stakeholders.
- Produce and review detailed engineering calculations, specifications, reports, and technical drawings.
- Provide technical leadership across HVAC, public health, electrical, or mechanical building services disciplines.
- Ensure compliance with current regulations, British Standards, and industry best practices.
- Attend client meetings and act as a technical lead throughout project lifecycles.
- Support business development activities, including fee proposals, presentations, and bid submissions.
- Manage project resources, budgets, and programme delivery.
- Mentor and develop junior and intermediate engineers.
- Contribute to sustainability initiatives, low–carbon design strategies, and net–zero projects.
Requirements
- Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or actively working towards Chartership.
- Extensive building services design experience within a consultancy environment.
- Strong technical knowledge of UK building regulations and relevant design standards.
- Proven experience leading projects and managing client relationships.
- Proficiency with industry–standard design software such as Amtech, Dialux, Relux, IES, Hevacomp, Revit, AutoCAD, or similar.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deliver within programme deadlines.
