This role manages the technical delivery, analysis and development of sustainability data-driven tools, and programmes that support the UK seafood sector and Seafish to improve sustainability performance.

The post holder is responsible for generating and applying robust evidence and analysis to support decision-making, including the development and application of sustainability metrics, carbon accounting approaches, and data visualisation tools.

  • The role manages delivery of key sustainability work programmes, including:
  • Ongoing development and technical delivery of the Seafood Carbon Emissions Profiling Tool (SCEPT), including methodology refinement, data interpretation, and industry application to support emissions reduction aligned with the UK’s 2050 Net Zero target.
  • Technical management of Seafish’s corporate sustainability data, reporting, and performance monitoring, including Greening Government Commitments (GGC) reporting and implementation of sustainability reporting frameworks.
  • Project management of a 2026–27 spatial mapping project on renewable marine fuel infrastructure, developing a UK-wide evidence base linking projected fuel demand with port infrastructure and future investment needs, producing both static and prototype interactive analytical outputs.

The role operates across carbon accounting, life-cycle assessment, sustainability reporting and spatial analysis, requiring the ability to translate complex data into clear, actionable insights for technical and non-technical audiences.

The post holder plays a key engagement role with a wide range of stakeholders, including seafood businesses, energy and sustainability specialists, researchers, data providers, and policy makers, using analytical outputs to inform and influence sector and policy decision-making.

The role provides line-management and direction to the Sustainability Officer, who supports delivery through coordination, data preparation, and operational delivery of programme activities.

  • Key Accountabilities
  • Under Seafish’s core ‘resilient supply chain’ work pillar and reporting to the Head of Sustainability and Reporting:
  • Deliver elements of Seafish's responsible sourcing and sustainability programme, translating strategic priorities into practical outputs.
  • Analyse sustainability, supply chain and sector data to identify trends, risks and opportunities, informing programme development and decision-making.
  • Engage with seafood businesses, delivery partners and stakeholders to encourage adoption of sustainable practices and support behaviour change.
  • Coordinate cross-functional sustainability projects, ensuring alignment with organisational objectives and Corporate Plan outcomes.
  • Develop evidence-based briefings, guidance and communications that translate technical sustainability issues into accessible information.
  • Seafood Carbon Emissions Profiling Tool (SCEPT) – 30%
  • Provide technical support, training and guidance to seafood businesses using SCEPT, acting as the primary contact with software provider Mérieux Nutri Sciences | Blonk.
  • Support ongoing tool development and improvements to emissions data quality, ensuring alignment with greenhouse gas accounting and life-cycle assessment best practice.
  • Develop training resources, case studies and presentations to increase industry uptake.
  • Analyse emissions data and tool outputs to generate insights and identify emissions reduction opportunities across the seafood supply chain.
  • Represent Seafish in relevant external forums, working groups and initiatives.
  • Renewable Marine Fuel Infrastructure Mapping (up to 40% in 2026–27)
  • Support spatial analysis linking seafood sector fuel demand with infrastructure availability.
  • Identify priority locations and gaps for future infrastructure investment.
  • Contribute to GIS analysis, mapping outputs and development of an interactive demonstration tool.
  • Work with partners and stakeholders to ensure outputs are robust, policy-relevant and effectively communicated.
  • Seafish Corporate Sustainability and GGC Reporting – 30%
  • Coordinate collection, validation and reporting of corporate sustainability data, including emissions, energy, travel, water and waste.
  • Maintain reporting systems and support Greening Government Commitments (GGC) submissions to Defra.
  • Monitor progress against sustainability targets and identify opportunities for improved environmental performance.
  • Support internal sustainability engagement and embed sustainability across organisational processes.
  • Line manage the Sustainability Officer, including workload planning, performance management and development.
  • Key Attributes
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, particularly in carbon accounting, energy modelling, life-cycle assessment and sustainability metrics.
  • Experience managing complex datasets and developing reliable reporting systems.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences.
  • The ability to manage multiple workstreams and deliver high-quality outputs to time and budget.
  • Strong report writing, presentation, facilitation and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • The ability to work both collaboratively and independently.

  • Select appropriate analytical methods, data sources and reporting approaches.
  • Interpret complex data and produce clear, reliable outputs for internal and external audiences.
  • Prioritise workloads across multiple projects and allocate work effectively.

  • A wide range of audiences from technical experts to senior decision-makers.
  • Knowledge, skills and experience required
  • A degree in a relevant discipline (e. g. environmental science, environmental management, energy/carbon management, or data/analytical disciplines applied to sustainability, or similar).
  • Knowledge of renewable marine fuels, including production, storage and distribution of hydrogen, ammonia and e-fuels.
  • Experience developing interactive mapping tools and data visualisation platforms to translate complex datasets into decision-ready insights.
  • Experience in sustainability analysis, carbon accounting, environmental data management or life-cycle assessment.
  • Experience working with greenhouse gas emissions data and carbon/sustainability reporting frameworks, including greenhouse gas accounting principles and standards.
  • Strong analytical skills, including experience working with complex datasets, energy systems analysis and techno-economic modelling to assess supply-demand alignment and infrastructure feasibility.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and experience producing technical reports and guidance materials.
  • Experience engaging stakeholders and supporting adoption of tools or methodologies.
  • Proven project management expertise and ability to deliver multiple projects to the required quality, budget and timescales.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Access and Word, and familiarity with data management and collaboration tools (e. g. Share Point and Microsoft Teams).

Experience of the following would be advantageous

  • (Working towards) full or chartered membership of an appropriate professional body (e. g. Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals or Institute of Energy).
  • Experience with environmental or sustainability data systems and geospatial energy system modelling (e. g. Geographic Information Systems).
  • Familiarity with Greening Government Commitments or similar sustainability or ESG reporting frameworks.
  • Experience in seafood supply chains, food systems or natural resource sectors.
  • Experience delivering training or technical support for tools or platforms.
  • A relevant postgraduate qualification is also desirable.

Salary and benefits

All roles within Seafish are classified and have defined salary bands.

This role sits within Job Family C in our pay structure, and the starting salary is at £41,000.

A new member’s appointment on the pay structure is dependent on the experience they bring to the role when they start.

New candidates normally start at the lower end of the range unless they can demonstrate considerable experience in the requirements of the role.
