Laboratory Analyst

The shipping industry is notoriously difficult to decarbonize, accounting for ~3% of global CO₂ emissions. Recent regulations from the EU and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) require ships to reduce their CO₂ emissions or pay expensive penalties. However, there are currently no commercially viable clean solutions available. Alternative power sources such as hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, and onboard batteries are still far from maturity for large ships, and energy‑efficiency solutions only reduce emissions by 5–10%.

Seabound is an award‑winning startup decarbonizing the global shipping industry by capturing CO₂ emissions directly onboard ships. We are building a retrofittable device that traps the CO₂ from a ship’s exhaust gas. It has the potential to be one of the simplest, safest, and most affordable solutions for zero‑emissions shipping. To date, we’ve completed two world‑first pilots; raised >$10M in equity and grant funding from top investors including Lowercarbon Capital, Collaborative Fund, Y Combinator, and Eastern Pacific Shipping; and partnered with leading shipping and industrial players. Having recently completed our first full‑scale commercial systems, Seabound is now entering its commercialization and scale‑up phase.

You will be working at Seabound HQ, which is based in North London, Edmonton. Our space is diverse including an office, workshop, yard, and laboratory space to facilitate all aspects of research and development. The laboratory was built in 2025, and features equipment for BET analysis, density measurements, TGA analysis, moisture analysis and bespoke carbonation testing equipment. We are also able to test our sorbent recipes on kilogram scales with our carbonation test equipment and in‑house sorbent production capabilities.

Roles And Responsibilities

• You will play a crucial part in the design and optimisation of our sorbent through rigorous chemical analysis and experimental work.
• You will be responsible for ensuring samples are analysed in accordance with the schedule and results are reported accurately, working closely with our Senior Research Scientist to communicate our findings to the wider team.
• You will also be able to develop your experimental design and execution skills to develop the highest performing sorbent for Seabound’s system, through mentoring from our Research Scientists.

What You’ll Do

• Facilitate a high throughput quality analysis, where efficient time management is an essential skill.
• Conform to all relevant health and safety and quality standards.
• Operate state of the art laboratory equipment.
• Assist with sample collection and running of experiments.
• Maintain equipment and laboratory auxiliaries.
• Maintain stock of laboratory consumables.
• Review collected data to spot outliers and deduce the need to reanalyse samples.
• Navigate our inhouse Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) designed to manage sample organisation, sample scheduling, and data storage.
• Summarise and communicate results to the wider team.
• Learn through the review of scientific literature and mentorship.
• Anything else that needs to be done in an early‑stage startup.

Skills and Requirements

• Chemistry background– degree or equivalent.
• Organisation and time management skills are essential for efficient multi‑tasking.
• High attention to detail and precision.
• Strong understanding of scientific methodologies.
• Basic data visualisation and summary statistics skills (e.g. in Microsoft Excel).
• Experience in a laboratory (training for specific equipment and techniques will be provided).
• Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
• Someone who is resourceful, ambitious, excited to tackle hard problems that no one has solved before, and holds themselves and others to a high standard.
• Someone who is passionate about tackling the climate crisis.

Bonus

• Experience designing and executing experiments.
