About The Role

The Product Safety Engineer is responsible for ensuring the company's products, systems, and engineered solutions are developed, assessed, tested, and supported in accordance with applicable safety legislation, industry standards, customer requirements, and internal safety processes. Product Safety Engineer will be based at either our Beckington, Bristol or Barnstaple sites. This role allows for flexible working with regular visits required to our Barnstaple site. The salary for this role is up to Β£64k, depending on experience.



Responsibilities



  • Lead and support product safety activities across the full engineering lifecycle, from concept and design through manufacture, delivery, operation, support, and disposal.

  • Identify hazards, assess product safety risks, and define proportionate risk reduction measures using recognised safety engineering techniques.

  • Knowledge of recognised safety and reliability techniques such as FMEA, FTA, HAZID, HAZOP, bow-tie analysis, ALARP assessment, reliability prediction, or safety case development.

  • Develop, review, and maintain safety documentation such as hazard logs, safety plans, safety assessments, safety cases, compliance matrices, and technical reports.

  • Work with systems, mechanical, electrical, software, manufacturing, quality, and test teams to ensure safety requirements are understood, implemented, verified, and traceable.

  • Review product designs, drawings, specifications, test evidence, and change proposals to confirm that product safety risks remain acceptable.

  • Support verification, validation, certification, and compliance activities, including product testing, design reviews, audits, inspections, and technical file preparation.

  • Provide product safety advice to project teams, suppliers, customers, and other stakeholders.

  • Monitor relevant legislation, standards, customer requirements, and industry guidance, and translate changes into practical engineering actions.

Skills & Qualifications



  • Ideally professional registration or working towards registration, such as EngTech, IEng, or CEng.

  • Experience of working in an engineering, manufacturing, defence, or technology environment.

  • Manufacturing and/or experience of working with Defence Standards 00-056 Safety Management Requirements for Defence Systems.

  • Good understanding of hazard identification, risk assessment, risk reduction, and safety assurance principles.

  • Experience producing or contributing to engineering safety documentation, technical reports, verification evidence, or compliance records.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain safety issues clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Structured, analytical approach with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks across projects.
