Support the Health & Safety Manager in the management of H&S for SCS activities, including the implementation of the H&S Management System (HSMS) to ensure compliance with OHSAS 18001:2007 certification and with Works Information. The role helps establish and maintain high Health and Safety standards for the project and includes flexible working options. We welcome discussions about flexibility at interview (part-time, remote working, or compressed hours).
Responsibilities
- Understand the SCS Health & Safety Policies and Processes and statutory requirements as they affect the SCS operations and ensure that the requirements are implemented.
- Provide operational and functional management advice on the practical implementation of the company's H&S policies and processes, including external stakeholders such as customers if necessary.
- Assist H&S Manager or delegate and Contract Management in understanding stakeholders' aims, priorities and risks with regards to H&S.
- Assist, where needed, with the development of Health and Safety Management plans if applicable and coordination of review.
- Provide operational and functional management with advice on the prevention of accidents, incidents and ill health.
- Assist the SHE Manager and other members of the HSS team in key tasks to develop, manage, implement and monitor the Health and Safety Management System.
- Establish, manage and maintain relationships with external stakeholders such as local authorities, HSE and others as required and directed.
- Provide guidance with regards to the assessment of and appointment of sub-contractors.
- Assist with H&S surveillance where required of operational sites and participate in parent company H&S audits as requested.
- Assist with the preparation of H&S risk assessments and safe systems of work when directed.
- Monitor, analyse and report on H&S performance; use data to highlight areas for further consideration and intervention.
- Assist and/or manage the investigation of accidents, incidents, dangerous occurrences, near misses and other incidents as directed.
- Assist in the preparation and implementation of H&S training/briefings, as directed.
- Promote best practice, capture and feed back best practice into the business and parent companies.
- Set standards and lead by example in the management of H&S.
- Liaise with other HSS team members and the wider organisation regarding H&S.
- Maintain own level of knowledge and competency in relation to H&S management, including appropriate qualifications and professional membership; obtain competency cards in line with the SCS Competence Card Compliance Standard.
- Understand the Client and Joint Venture Partners' Environment and Sustainability Policies, Processes and statutory requirements as they affect operations and ensure implementation where applicable within the discipline.
- Be a welcomed member of the wider team with opportunities to take on additional responsibility and participate in networks and events (e.g., STEM ambassador).
Qualifications
- Essential: Experience in Construction / Infrastructure Health & Safety

- Essential: Membership of IOSH - Tech IOSH
- Essential: Collaborative behaviours
- Desired: Five years' experience in Construction / Infrastructure Health & Safety
- Desired: Safety, Health and Environmental Diploma, Degree or equivalent NCRQ or NVQ
- Desired: Membership of IOSH - Grad IOSH
- Other: A physical or mental impairment, which has a substantial and long-term effect on daily activities (as applicable)

The role will work on the HS2 project. HS2 is the UK's new high-speed rail network. It will be a catalyst for economic growth across Britain and connect 8 of the UK's 10 biggest cities with fast, reliable services. The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) team is delivering the HS2 London Tunnels Contract, including twin-bored tunnels, SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, and related works. Salary is competitive with an excellent benefits package.
