Role: Candidates for Assistant Engineering Manager must have proven experience of large-scale civil engineering projects. Your previous/background experience will likely have been within Construction and now you are looking to use your depth of knowledge in support of others. Knowledge of construction techniques and processes across for example earthworks, earth retaining structures, RC structures formwork falsework, drainage, temporary works and quality assurance. A practical and working knowledge of the processes and procedures for the delivery of works with emphasis on quality, assurance, survey and I and M disciplines in relation both temporary and permanent works activities. Knowledge and experience are the key attributes for the role along with strong interpersonal organizational team working skills and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively. The confidence to challenge is also a desirable attribute as the role will support the Construction delivery team in providing guidance to them whilst maintaining a focus on deliverables. You will be responsible to the section Engineering Manager.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing permanent works design and ensuring appropriate input from the construction team during the design.
  • Support the interfaces between construction and design during the construction phase: review of key RFIs from construction to design, approval of proposed change to design following the TQ/Field Change process (as part of the management and control of change) and approval of any NCRs raised, including implementing measures to avoid similar non-conformances in future.
  • Identifying any changes during construction that could have an impact on either the temporary works design or permanent works design and control of that change.
  • Oversight of temporary works planning, coordination, design, installation, use and removal including review and approval of significant temporary works: their design and method statements.
  • Support and input to the construction assurance process, which is undertaken by the construction team in accordance with the processes managed by the Assurance team.
  • Support and input in the production, review, approval and implementation of ITPs, which are produced by the construction team in accordance with the processes managed by the Quality team.
  • Assist in the timely identification of temporary works requirements, solution development and selection.
  • Advise the permanent works designer of any temporary conditions, or loads, that should be considered in the permanent works design.
  • Assist in ensuring that temporary works design requirements are sufficiently identified, reviewed and safely implemented.
  • Ensure that any proposed changes in materials or construction are checked against the original design specifications and appropriate action taken.
  • Undertake constructability reviews and provide input appropriate to the nature of the works, review ITP’s WPP’s, NCR’s.
  • Provide technical support to the construction delivery teams.
  • Mentor site engineers, promote workface learning and professional development.
  • Understand the Client and Joint Venture Partners' Environment and Sustainability Policies, Processes and statutory requirements as they affect the company's operations and ensure that the requirements, as applicable within their discipline, are implemented on the project.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Chartered (or near Chartered) member of the ICE or equivalent (desirable).
  • Engineering or Design experience (desired).
  • Construction experience (essential).
  • Temporary works experience (desirable).
  • Understanding and application of COP’s and HSWA 1974.
  • Understanding and application of the CDM Regulations 2015.
  • Knowledge of civil engineering structures and earthworks.
  • Appreciation of working in close proximity to live rail infrastructure.

About The Company:

The role will work on the HS2 project. HS2 is the UK’s new high speed rail network. It will be a catalyst for economic growth across Britain, freeing up space on the existing railways and connecting 8 out of the UK’s 10 biggest cities with fast, reliable and frequent high speed services. The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 Main Civils Contracts which include both Lots S1 (Euston Tunnels & Approaches) and S2 (Northolt Tunnels). The combined value of the contracts is around £1.8 billion with the works due for completion in 2025. Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.
