We are looking for a PostgreSQL Forensic Specialist to lead a technical assessment into reported database anomalies, determining whether sufficient evidence and technical access exist to support a defensible, in-depth investigation. This is a highly specialised role suited to someone with deep PostgreSQL internals expertise, who can work methodically through complex transactional data, reconstruct historical activity, and identify the key technical and evidential risk areas that warrant further examination.
The specialist will be responsible for establishing whether sufficient evidence and technical access exist to conduct a defensible investigation into the reported anomalies. The specialist should assess and document:
- historical concurrency anomalies (e.g., lost updates, stale writes, partial transactions)
- The scale, complexity, and forensic relevance of the underlying PostgreSQL data structures and transaction model.
- The availability and completeness of historical artefacts, including database records, WAL, logs, backups, audit data, and other sources.
- The feasibility of reconstructing historical transaction activity and establishing reliable timelines for the reported anomalies.
- The principal technical and evidential risk areas that may require deeper forensic examination during a subsequent investigation.
Also, the specialist should be able to:
- Reconstruct transaction timelines where feasible
- Correlate anomalies with audit/metadata to determine business impact
- Catalogue distinct issue types with verifiable examples
Skills:
- PostgreSQL Internals Expertise Required specifically:
- MVCC (Multi-Version Concurrency Control)
- Transaction semantics and Locking behaviour
- Advance knowledge of PostgreSQL Write-Ahead Logging.
- Expert or advanced experience with physical/logical PostgreSQL data structures.
- Highly proficient with PostgreSQL Toolkit and 3rd party diagnostic tools
The specialist must be experienced in:
- correlating evidence across multiple systems / schemas / logs
- investigating concurrency issues with cloud database vendors
Experience with common database-access frameworks is desirable, including:
- JDBC
- Hibernate
- SQLAlchemy
- equivalent PostgreSQL frameworks.
