Job Description
Are you passionate about protecting communities from flooding and improving the health of Scotland's rivers and coastal shores?
We're looking for two Waste Water Catchment Planners to join our sewer flooding team-one permanent role and one 12-month fixed-term opportunity. In this role, you'll take the lead in understanding risks and identifying opportunities within your wastewater catchment areas by working closely with a wide range of stakeholders.
You'll drive projects through option investigations and planning, gathering the evidence needed to build strong business cases that secure investment for sustainable catchment strategies. These solutions will enhance sewer network capacity, reduce customer impacts, and help keep our rivers clean by minimizing sewer overflows.
Your projects will vary widely-from large-scale sewer upgrades and improvements at individual sites, to city-wide partnerships focused on innovative blue-green infrastructure. You'll also be the key contact for customers affected by sewer flooding, making a real difference in their communities.
What you'll do
You'll be assigned responsibility for sewer catchments within several Local Authority areas and will collaborate with colleagues across Scottish Water to develop knowledge and understanding of sewer network performance issues and opportunities in these catchments, including the management of surface water.
You will establish relationships with external stakeholders, particularly Local Authorities and SEPA, to provide mutual support on overlapping responsibilities and to fulfil requirements specified in the Flood Risk Management Act.
You will also play a leading role in driving the objectives outlined in Scottish Water's Improving Urban Waters Routemap to reduce sewage-related debris in our environment and frequency of spills from combined sewer overflows.
You will work with our framework technical consultants and construction contractors to advance projects through a defined process of scoping, survey, hydraulic model review, optioneering and solution design to a stage where the preferred solution business case is granted investment approval. The next couple of years will be an exciting time at Scottish Water as we transition from one six-year investment cycle to the next, with significant public interest in the impacts of sewer overflows, flooding and climate change.
What you'll need
You'll have experience working in the water industry, with a solid understanding of wastewater networks and hydraulic modelling. You'll also be familiar with surface water management and how it fits into the bigger picture.
Strong communication skills are key-you'll be able to write clear, well-structured technical reports and presentations that highlight the important details and offer practical recommendations. You'll be confident explaining complex issues to a range of stakeholders and skilled at influencing change, even when it's outside your direct control.
You're analytical and organised, always digging for the evidence needed to support critical decisions. Experience with GIS and hydraulic modelling software will help you hit the ground running.

The not-so-small print
This role will be a Grade 7. If you're new to Scottish Water, you'll join us on a starting salary of £44,030. Performance-driven pay progression would then allow you to move through the range to a maximum of £55,000.
