An exciting and high-profile opportunity has arisen for an experienced, enthusiastic and highly motivated Finance Technical Specialist – Tax and Treasury Team Leader to join our Treasury, Tax and Insurance (TTI) team within the Finance Directorate.

The TTI team is a collaborative, specialist team based at our Bridge office in Stepps near Glasgow, playing a critical role in ensuring robust tax and treasury governance and compliance across the Scottish Water Group.

What you’ll do

  • Lead and develop a small team, providing clear direction, coaching and support to ensure the consistent delivery of a high-quality tax and treasury service.
  • Work closely with colleagues to review and improve processes and controls, ensuring they remain effective, efficient and aligned to current requirements.
  • Lead the delivery of corporation tax compliance across the Scottish Water Group, taking responsibility for the preparation and submission of corporation tax returns, country-by-country reporting and compliance with BEPS requirements.
  • Support year-end statutory and regulatory reporting and play an important role in helping the organisation achieve the Fair Tax Mark each year while maintaining its HMRC low-risk status.
  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert in corporation tax, working with stakeholders across the business to support and enhance the delivery of other direct tax obligations.
  • Coordinate the Senior Accounting Officer (SAO) process, ensuring all activities are delivered in line with requirements and supported by appropriate documentation and controls.
  • Engage with HMRC on audits and enquiries, providing clear, practical advice to colleagues across the business.
  • Identify and manage tax risks, support the implementation of appropriate actions, and contribute to system developments and wider business initiatives where there are tax implications.
  • Have oversight of treasury activities, particularly monitoring cashflow and ensuring the organisation maintains sufficient liquidity in line with its risk appetite.
  • Keep up to date with changes in tax legislation and support their implementation across the organisation.
  • Contribute to the development of the Group’s Tax Strategy and engage with external bodies, including the Water UK Direct Tax Group.
  • Report to the Tax, Treasury and Insurance Manager and work closely with colleagues across Finance and the wider business, building strong and collaborative relationships.

What you’ll need

  • Significant experience in corporation tax within a large or complex organisation, along with a strong track record of delivering high-quality compliance and reporting.
  • A relevant professional qualification, such as CIOT, ATT or ACCA, or equivalent experience.
  • Clear and confident communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax matters in a straightforward way to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience of leading or supporting others and fostering a collaborative, high-performing team environment.
  • Strong analytical and organisational skills, with the ability to plan and manage workload effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Good IT skills, including Excel, and experience of working with tax or financial systems.
  • Experience of other direct taxes or exposure to treasury activities, particularly cashflow forecasting and liquidity management, would be beneficial.
  • Experience of Alphatax software would also be advantageous.

The not-so-small print

This role will be a Grade 8 level. If you’re new to Scottish Water, you’ll join us on a starting salary of £54,776. Performance-driven pay progression would then allow you to move through the range to a maximum of £74,386. We operate Balanced Hybrid working at Scottish Water and we encourage people to work half their time in a Scottish Water location.
