We are looking for an experienced Principal Integration Engineer to join a highly influential integration engineering function responsible for defining, governing, and enabling enterprise integration capabilities across Scottish Water. In this role, you will provide technical leadership and architectural direction for Azure Integration Services, ensuring our integration platforms remain secure, resilient, scalable, and closely aligned to organisational outcomes.

You will work in close partnership with Enterprise Architecture, Cyber Security, Digital Product teams, Data Platforms and external delivery partners. Together you will develop and maintain integration standards, reference architectures, and reusable patterns that allow Scottish Water to connect systems safely, consistently, and efficiently, while maintaining strong governance and control across the enterprise.

As a senior technical authority, you will operate as the organisation’s centre of expertise for Azure Integration Services. You will help shape and evolve our integration strategy, guide complex delivery activity, and drive continuous improvement in the maturity, reliability, and overall value of our enterprise integration platforms.

What you’ll do

  • You will be responsible for defining, owning, and continually evolving the enterprise integration architecture and engineering strategy in line with Scottish Water’s wider digital and architectural principles.
  • You will act as the design authority for complex, high-risk, or business-critical integrations, providing architectural assurance and clear technical direction across programmes and projects.
  • A core part of the role will involve developing and maintaining standards, reference architectures, and repeatable integration patterns across Azure services such as Logic Apps, Service Bus, API Management, Event Grid, Event Hubs, Functions, and, where appropriate, Data Factory or Synapse pipelines.
  • You will lead the adoption of event-driven and API-first integration approaches that enable scalable and reliable communication across digital services, enterprise systems, and operational technology platforms.
  • You will define integration guardrails that underpin secure-by-design engineering practices, covering areas such as security, resiliency, observability, error handling, and data governance.
  • You will also champion modern integration approaches, including asynchronous messaging, API lifecycle management, loosely coupled architectures, and event-driven design principles.
  • In support of our move towards a centralised integration platform capability, you will help ensure that delivery teams can build integrations quickly while maintaining an appropriate level of governance and consistency.
  • You will take responsibility for monitoring and reporting on the health and reliability of the integration platform, including performance, throughput, latency, failure rates, operational resilience, and platform risk.
  • You will identify and address technical debt, resilience gaps, and other platform risks to protect the long-term sustainability of Scottish Water’s integration landscape.
  • You will also provide expert delivery support across programmes and product teams, ensuring architectural alignment and strong engineering practice throughout the lifecycle.
  • Close collaboration with Cyber Security will be essential, ensuring all integrations meet the required security, compliance, identity management, and public sector obligations.
  • You will play a key role in strengthening organisational capability by providing technical leadership, coaching, and mentoring across engineering and architecture communities, and by engaging confidently with senior stakeholders to articulate architecture decisions, trade-offs, and associated risks.

What You’ll Need

We are looking for a senior integration professional with extensive experience in Azure Integration Services who can combine strategic thinking with practical, hands-on expertise and strong stakeholder engagement. You should have a proven background in designing and delivering enterprise integration architectures across Azure services, including event-driven, API-led, and message-based designs. You will be expected to demonstrate a strong understanding of secure and resilient integration engineering practices and the development of architectural standards, strategies, and reusable patterns. You should have experience acting as a technical authority on complex integrations, influencing and guiding delivery teams across organisational boundaries, and communicating technical information effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences. You will be a self-driven technical leader who exercises sound judgement and is able to operate effectively within governance frameworks while enabling continuous improvement. Experience within regulated environments, critical national infrastructure, or the public sector will be highly advantageous.

Experience & Certifications

We are seeking candidates with significant experience in enterprise-scale integration architecture and delivery, including the design and operation of Azure Integration Services, API governance, event-driven and messaging architectures, secure integration patterns, observability and monitoring practices for distributed systems, and DevOps or CI/CD practices relevant to integration engineering. Experience of integration patterns, event-driven architecture, and enterprise messaging frameworks is also highly desirable. Relevant professional certifications such as Azure Integration Services Developer Associate, Azure Solutions Architect Expert, Azure Developer Associate, or DevOps Engineer Expert will be considered an advantage.

Looking out for you

While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance. You’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take paid time off to volunteer in your community. When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave.
