What does a Veterinary Care Assistant do? The Veterinary Care Assistant will be responsible for providing a high standard of clinical care to animals in the veterinary clinic whilst promoting animal welfare and supporting our internal and external Veterinary Surgeons and Registered Veterinary Nurses. Our clinics in Glasgow and Lanarkshire operate Monday‑Friday, with no weekend, out‑of‑hours or on‑call. They will provide supportive care for animals receiving treatment, including the monitoring and treatment of animals kept as in‑patients. They will also be responsible for upholding the hygiene standards of the clinic and providing support to the clinic reception when required, delivering excellent levels of client and customer care, and promoting the good image of the Scottish SPCA.

Overview Of Main Duties And Responsibilities:

• Communicate clearly and effectively with clients, members of the public, veterinary professionals, and regulatory authorities, using professional judgement to tailor communication appropriately to the audience and situation.
• Monitor and care for animals during and after medical procedures.
• Assist with administering medications, preparing treatment areas, and performing basic clinical tasks under the direct supervision of veterinary surgeons and registered veterinary nurses.
• Dispense and/or administer medication as prescribed by the Veterinary Surgeon to the Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (ARRC) and the public in line with dispensing procedures and guidelines.
• Maintain the hygiene of the clinic and perform cleaning in line with cleaning and infection control policies and procedures.
• Report any problems relating to clinical and non‑clinical equipment to assigned staff.
• Provide support and cover for the clinic reception areas, greeting and directing clients upon arrival, ensuring the reception area is well‑organised and that clients are attended to in a professional, compassionate, and timely manner.
• Assist in managing the flow of clients through the clinic.
• Promote a good image of Scottish SPCA both internally and externally by communicating in a positive manner and minimise any risk to Scottish SPCA's reputation.
• Act as a positive ambassador for the Scottish SPCA in all professional interactions, supporting public events, media engagements, and fundraising initiatives as required.

What makes a good Veterinary Care Assistant?

• Education to Higher Level (Scotland) or A-Level/equivalent.
• Practical experience working with animals.
• Proven experience working with the public and delivering a good customer experience.
• Working as part of a team.
• Previous experience in a Veterinary clinical environment.

• Subject to a Disclosure Scotland PVG check.
