Job Purpose

The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) is currently recruiting permanent Plumbers to work within our prisons near you across Scotland.

The Plumber will support the Estates Management team in all aspects of Estates work to provide a comprehensive repairs and maintenance service for all mechanical systems and plant, for example plumbing, BEMS, heating and ventilation systems.

There will be a requirement for you to periodically work on call hours, and you may need to travel to other establishments and areas. For this reason, a full driving licence that enables the person to drive in the UK is preferred. SPS is willing to consider proposals put forward by applicants to carry out the duties by any other means.

All of our Plumber’s roles are based on 35 hours per week worked across Monday to Friday and we provide all tools and PPE.

Current Annual Pay Package of up to £36,569 + On Call Allowance* for full time 35 hours per week.

How do I apply?

The application process for this role consists of uploading your CV into a section of the application form. Please ensure you include detail of your skills and experience within your CV to allow us to fully assess your skills and experience for the Plumbers role.

Applicants should have a recognised apprenticeship in heating, plumbing or mechanical discipline to SVQ level 3. Evidenced equivalent significant experience will also be considered e.g. CSCS gold card holder.

On completion of all interviews, a locational merit order list will be created. Appointments will be made in accordance to merit where the current vacancies are. Where there are more successful candidate(s) than posts available, locational reserve merit order lists may be created and retained for 12 months.

Successful candidates will be subject to pre-employment checks, which will include an Enhanced Disclosure Scotland check, References, Right to work in UK checks as well as a Medical Assessment (inclusive of BMI and blood pressure check etc).

*Please note the annual pay package is dependent on qualifications, skills and experience, and is made up of basic salary plus temporary allowances – more details of this will be communicated should you proceed to interview stage.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out reactive / planned maintenance and complete minor works as defined and specified on water distribution systems, plant, equipment, and associated assets.
  • Maintain a safe and healthy working environment through regular inspection and testing of heating appliances and installations in accordance with relevant legislation.
  • Monitor and adjust systems to ensure optimum performance of the plant and equipment, aligned with statutory regulations. Produce related reports and recommendations as required.
  • Become familiar with the operation and maintenance of the various SPS systems. Providing support and advice on issues to the Technical Manager. Assisting other members of the team with their activities as required.
  • Assume practical responsibility for all plumbing, heating and ventilation related installations and provide timely pre-emptive condition reports to Technical Manager. Complete and sign work orders as issued by the SPS Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Assess and order parts and equipment necessary for individual tasks, in conjunction with the administrator.

Person Specification

Assessment of specific behaviours, of which there are eight, will be determined by the role you are applying for. Whilst it is unlikely you will be assessed on all of them, you will be assessed on those identified as key to role.

Qualification Requirements

Applicant should have served a recognised apprenticeship in heating, plumbing or mechanical discipline to SVQ level 3.

If successful, this will need to be evidenced through formal certification paperwork, however we will also consider evidence of this through alternative routes including CSCS gold card.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Requirements

Experience of mechanical services, plumbing and heating services maintenance in an industrial/commercial environment.

Have awareness of other basic maintenance and repair tasks (for example, electrical and building works maintenance and repairs), or be willing to develop these skills.

Sound knowledge of Health and Safety Legislation, Risk Assessments, Method Statements (Safe Systems of Work), Legionella and control measures etc.

Ability to interpret from drawings, instructions, and specifications.
