Job Purpose: The post holder will support the SPS Maintenance Team in all aspects of Estates work. Delivering preventative and reactive maintenance activities on estates locking, building fabric, installations, and replacements. Assisting other members of the team with their activities as required. There will be a requirement for the post holder to periodically work on call hours (allowance provided). It is expected that the post holder will be able to attend their home establishment within 1 hour. For this reason, a full driving licence that enables the person to drive in the UK is preferred. SPS is willing to consider proposals put forward by applicants to carry out the duties by any other means.

All of our Joiner roles are based on 35 hours per week worked across Monday to Friday and we provide all tools and PPE. Current Annual Pay Package of up to £37,878 + On Call Allowance* for full time 35 hours per week.

We currently have vacancies in the following locations: HMP Perth, HMP Shotts, HMP Inverness. Please confirm which of these locations would be an option for you. On your application form you will be asked to state which locations you would like to be considered for, you can choose a singular location from those above or as many as you like to widen your options so long as you can commit to working in this location on a permanent basis.

Applicants should have a recognised apprenticeship in carpentry and/or joinery to SVQ level 3.

On completion of all interviews, a locational merit order list will be created. Appointments will be made in accordance to merit where the current vacancies are. Where there are more successful candidate(s) than posts available, locational reserve merit order lists may be created and retained for 12 months. Successful candidates will be subject to pre-employment checks, which will include an Enhanced Disclosure Scotland check, References, Right to work in UK checks as well as a Medical Assessment (inclusive of BMI and blood pressure check etc).

*Please note the annual pay package is dependent on qualifications, skills and experience, and is made up of basic salary plus temporary allowances – more details of this will be communicated should you proceed to interview stage.

Responsibilities: Responsible for ensuring all assigned tasks are inspected, tested, repaired or installed in a safe manner compliant with manufacturer's instructions and Health & Safety Executive (HSE) guidelines. Assess, plan and report work requirements to manager. Maintain records through to completion, recording progress on the SPS Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS). Maintain mechanical locks together with the security, operation and record keeping of the establishment lock store and associated documents as per SPS policy. Ensure that all fire building systems and controls such as doors, seals, alarms, compartmentation etc. are intact and maintained in accordance with the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) Fire Safety Manual. Become familiar with the operation and maintenance of the various SPS systems. Providing support, advice, and improvement recommendations to the Technical Manager. Assisting other members of the team with their activities as required. Responsible and accountable for the security of all tools and materials used by you. Maintain a safe and healthy working environment in accordance with local regulations and relevant statutory legislation.

Person Specification: SPS recruitment and selection practice is based on the fundamentals of our Behavioural Competency Framework. This identifies behaviours and standards required both of applicants seeking to join us, and our staff in their respective roles. Assessment of specific behaviours, of which there are twelve, will be determined by the role you are applying for. Whilst it is unlikely you will be assessed on all of them, you will be assessed on these identified as key to role.

Qualifications Requirements: Applicants should have a recognised apprenticeship in carpentry and/or joinery to SVQ level 3. Evidenced equivalent significant experience will also be considered e.g. CSCS gold card holder. Please ensure CV clearly outlines the above qualifications deemed as essential.

Experience Requirements: Knowledge Skills Requirements: Experience relevant to the role having worked within a similar environment or other maintenance/construction environment as a carpenter or joiner. Please ensure CV provides an example specific to the above criteria. Have awareness of other basic maintenance and repair tasks on plant and equipment or be willing to develop these skills. Sound knowledge of Building and Health and Safety Legislation e.g., Risk Assessments, Method Statements (Safe Systems of Work), Building (Scotland) Act and Regulations etc. Ability to interpret from drawings, instructions, and specifications.
