Job Purpose: To act as advisor, ensuring that all health & safety legislation is adhered to and that policies and procedures are adopted, and to help to plan, implement, monitor and review the protective and preventative measures which provide assurance to the Governor that HMP Shotts can minimise operational losses, occupational health problems, accidents and injuries.

Responsibilities:

  • Improve the safety culture within the establishment through raising awareness, competency levels, and commitment to Health, Safety and Fire from all levels, improving communication and establishing robust control systems.
  • Lead initial accident/fire investigations, identify corrective actions required and drive their implementation.
  • Report any incidents to outside agencies as required and liaise with such agencies during investigations.
  • Carry out regular establishment inspections with Managers, GIC and TUS & H&S Representatives to check policies and procedures are being properly implemented.
  • Highlight any potential area of risk to the SPS and establishment to the GIC and Senior Management and drive through solutions.
  • Advise all staff on all regulatory requirements and provide training and coaching as required.

Person Specification: SPS recruitment and selection practice is based on the fundamentals of our Competencies for Success Framework. This identifies behaviours and standards required both of applicants seeking to join us, and our staff in their respective roles. Assessment of specific behaviours, of which there are eight, will be determined by the role you are applying for. Whilst it is unlikely you will be assessed on all of them, you will be assessed on those identified as key to role.

Qualification Requirements:

  • NEBOSH National Diploma in H&S Management or equivalent NVQ level 6 qualification in H&S Management. ESSENTIAL.
  • Attained or willing to work toward SPS Fire Safety Officer accreditation. ESSENTIAL.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Requirements:

  • Competent in the use of computerised systems including SharePoint and Microsoft Office. ESSENTIAL.
  • Knowledge of current Health & Fire Safety legislative requirements within a prison environment. ESSENTIAL.
  • Experience of working within the field of Health and Fire Safety. DESIRABLE.
