Are you passionate about tackling the climate emergency and enjoy working in a fast paced environment managing multiple priorities?
As Head of Onshore Low Carbon Electricity within the Onshore Electricity Policy unit you would lead a small team of five responsible for setting policy and removing barrier to the deployment of onshore renewables including onshore wind, bioenergy and solar. The teams mission is to use its work to provide a vital contribution to the fight against climate change and to support the transition to net zero. This is a vital, stretching role responsible for supporting the deployment of onshore renewables in Scotland which will be crucial to meeting Scotland’s increased demand for electricity as we transition towards net zero.
While these are largely reserved areas of policy, there are several parts, particularly related to onshore wind, where the Scottish Government plays a key role through the delivery of commitments in the Onshore Wind Sector deal. As Head of Onshore Low Carbon Electricity you would be expected lead engagement and policy work to support the further deployment of onshore renewables. A large part of this role is likely to involve liaising with key UK Government colleagues, industry leaders and internal teams to create solutions to potential barriers including delivery of a solution for the Eskdalemuir Seismic Array and issues relating to the impact of onshore wind deployment on peat.
Applicants must be aware that this post, while being permanent, will be reviewed at the 12 month stage and successful candidate may be asked to cover alternative posts within the Directorate.

- Managing relationships and communications – at official and ministerial level- with the UK Government, energy industry, industry bodies and other key industry stakeholders on a range of issues.
- Lead the delivery of commitments in Onshore Wind Sector Deal, the Solar Vision and the Bioenergy Policy Statement.
- Oversight, briefing and advice on renewable electricity with other key policy areas.
- Leadership of a team comprising of five staff members and all other duties as required by the line manager.
