Description
Job description
An opportunity has arisen for assistant solicitors to join the legal team of the Emma Caldwell Inquiry

The Emma Caldwell Inquiry was formally set up on 9 December 2025. The Inquiry’s Terms of Reference were published by Ministers on that date. The Inquiry has been set up to examine the initial investigation into the murder of Emma Caldwell and to establish what, if anything, could have been done to apprehend Iain Packer sooner.

The Inquiry legal team is headed up by the Solicitor to the Inquiry, Ciara Pang. The Inquiry is still in the early stages of its investigation and as such you will have the opportunity to play an important role in the Inquiry.

You will work closely with the other assistant solicitors within the legal team and will work closely with all members of the Inquiry team and will be line managed by the deputy solicitor, Duncan Peat.

In return, you will have the rare opportunity to support a high-profile Public Inquiry.

Responsibilities
  • Identifying and recovering evidence, including engagement with external stakeholders.
  • Reviewing and analysing any recovered evidence, assessing its relevance to the Terms of Reference and producing summaries and thematic reports on the evidence for use by counsel.

  • Instructing, liaising and working collaboratively with Counsel on a regular basis.
