Boundaries Scotland is an independent public body responsible for reviewing and making recommendations on electoral and administrative boundaries across Scotland. Its work includes reviewing Scottish Parliament constituencies and regions, local government wards, councillor numbers and council area boundaries, helping to ensure electoral arrangements remain fair, effective and reflective of Scotland's communities and demographics.
The Commission operates within a legislative framework set by the Scottish and UK Parliaments and is supported by a secretariat provided by the Scottish Government. Through regular reviews and public consultation, Boundaries Scotland plays an important role in maintaining confidence in Scotland's democratic processes.
Responsibilities
THE ROLE OF COMMISSIONERS
Commissioners are collectively responsible for considering evidence and making recommendations on boundary reviews. They work with fellow Commissioners and the secretariat to ensure decisions are impartial, transparent and based on the relevant statutory requirements and consultation responses.
Commissioners also help shape the strategic direction of the organisation, uphold high standards of governance, and act as ambassadors for the Commission. The role requires sound judgement, constructive participation in meetings, and a commitment to maintaining the independence and integrity of Boundaries Scotland and its work.

REMUNERATION AND TIME COMMITMENT
The Commissioner role is renumerated at a daily fee of £228 per day. The role is non-pensionable. Commissioners will be reimbursed for reasonable expenses.
The appointment is for a period of four years. The time commitment is usually no more than 2 days per month to support Commission meetings. Meetings usually take place in person in the Commission offices in Edinburgh. Meeting papers are available in the weeks before meetings for members to digest material and form preliminary views before collectively reaching decisions.
Qualifications
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
We are seeking candidates who can demonstrate skills and experience in the following criteria:
Strategic Communications and Stakeholder Engagement in a Public or Political Context
Understanding of the Scottish political landscape
Experience of strategic planning
Good communication skills
Good analytical skills
Desirable but not essential:
- Knowledge of Scottish Local Government and Planning
