Lathallan School is an award-winning, co-educational independent day and boarding school situated within 60 acres of beautiful coastal grounds in Aberdeenshire. What we are seeking
We are seeking an enthusiastic, creative, and well-qualified specialist to deliver a vibrant Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) curriculum to our Junior School pupils, our pre-school nursery class, and our S1 and S2 year groups. Our current languages taught are Spanish and French; however we would consider applications from those proficient in one of those languages, plus another.
Responsibilities
- Academic & Teaching Excellence
Plan, prepare, and deliver high-quality, creative Modern Foreign Language lessons tailored to various age groups and abilities. Align teaching with the principles of the Curriculum for Excellence, ensuring tracking data reflects the development of the four capacities. Maintain a dynamic, positive, and immersive language-learning environment within the classroom. Confidently utilise digital technology. Differentiate learning effectively to support and challenge all pupils in our small-group settings, collaborating with classroom assistants and Support for Learning staff when required. - Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC)
Embrace the school’s award-winning outdoor ethos by actively integrating the surrounding grounds, school farm, and coastline into the MFL curriculum (e.g., outdoor language trails, nature vocabulary immersion). Plan and organise cultural enrichment activities, language days, or local trips to broaden pupils’ global and cultural outlook. - Assessment & Reporting
Use a variety of formative and summative assessment tools to monitor progress and inform next steps for individual learners. Complete detailed, holistic academic reports for parents three times per academic session. Attend Parents’ Meetings (twice per session) and maintain open, professional communication with parents regarding pupil progress and wellbeing. - Pastoral & Wider School Community
Provide high-quality pastoral care, ensuring the safety, health, and well-being of all pupils in line with school safeguarding policies. Carry out playground and lunch supervision duties as part of the staff rota. Engage enthusiastically with the broader life of the school, including attending whole-school events and contributing to the co-curricular / extra-curricular club programme. Actively support the marketing and promotion of the school, including attending Open Days where required.
Person Specification / Qualifications
- Required – Relevant degree or primary/secondary teaching qualification with an MFL specialism.
- Experience – Proven track record of Modern Foreign Languages teaching to primary children.
- Languages – High level of fluency in two foreign languages (one of which must be French or Spanish).
- Skills – Excellent classroom management and interpersonal skills.
- Attributes – Ability to motivate, inspire, and build strong relationships with young children; highly collaborative team player with a flexible outlook.
Location & Schedule
Location: Brotherton Castle, Johnshaven DD10 0HN
School Hours: 8.20am – 5pm
Job Type: One year fixed-term with the potential to become permanent, part-time (around 0.5FTE).
Pay: Lathallan operates its own salary structure and pension scheme.
Terms and Conditions
- Registration: Applicants must be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) or provide written confirmation from the GTCS of their eligibility for registration.
- Safeguarding: The appointment is subject to a satisfactory enhanced background check and report from the PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) Scheme.
