Lathallan School nurtures young minds between the ages of 6 months and 18 years within a vibrant and supportive environment. Lathallan is the only all-through school in Scotland to have been awarded the Gold Learning Outside the Classroom quality mark, and was shortlisted for UK Small Independent School of the Year 2025. We don’t just teach in classrooms – we teach in our 19th‑century castle, across our 60‑acre grounds and through adventures beyond the school gates. We are looking for a Junior School teacher who thrives in this vibrant environment. This part‑time position (0.6 FTE) offers the opportunity to integrate your own passions into the daily life of our community. If the successful candidate possesses the language proficiency to teach Modern Foreign Languages (MFL), a full‑time role will be considered.

Academic Expectations

  • Work collaboratively and independently to plan, deliver, and evaluate engaging, challenging, and creative learning experiences that meet the needs of all learners.
  • Use digital technology confidently and competently in the delivery of lessons and for administrative purposes.
  • Utilise the surrounding landscape and embed ‘Learning Outside the Classroom’ to support learning for sustainability and learning across curricular areas.
  • Use a variety of assessment tools to inform the planning of next steps for all learners.
  • Engage in moderation and cross‑marking to support a shared understanding of educational standards.
  • Gather and record tracking data for each learner to monitor progress through Curriculum for Excellence levels, reflecting the four capacities.
  • Work alongside classroom assistants and learning support staff to provide appropriate targeted support for all learners.
  • Complete end‑of‑term academic reports three times per academic session.
  • Report to parents at Parents’ Meetings twice per academic session and at additional points throughout the year as required.

Pastoral Responsibilities

  • Liaise closely with parents on matters relating to pupil wellbeing and academic progress.
  • Take registration twice daily and promptly follow up any absences with the School Office.
  • Carry out playground and supervision duties, as per the staff rota, during the normal school day.
  • Use positive behaviour strategies to encourage and maintain appropriate standards of conduct in accordance with school policies and rules.
  • Collate end‑of‑term reports and provide holistic, constructive feedback on each learner.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Be thoroughly familiar with and abide by the school’s policies and procedures.
  • Ensure all mandatory training is completed, including Child Protection, Safeguarding, and GDPR updates.
  • Engage with whole‑school self‑evaluation to support the ongoing improvement of the Junior School.
  • Demonstrate a clear commitment to career‑long professional learning (CLPL) and maintain an up‑to‑date knowledge of educational policy and theory to inform your practice.
  • Engage proactively with the GTCS Professional Update, including the Professional Review and Development (PRD) process.

Wider Responsibilities

  • Participate actively in and support whole‑school events, including the Lathallan Mini Highland Games, Lathallan Rugby 7s, school performances, the Carol Service, and Presentation Day.
  • Plan and organise class and school trips related to curricular studies and extracurricular activities.
  • Contribute to our co‑curricular programme in a way that reflects your unique skills and interests (e.g., Music, Drama, Sport, Outdoor Education, ICT, Design, etc.).
  • Actively support the marketing and promotion of the school, including attending Open Days where required.

Job Details

  • Location – Brotherton Castle, Johnshaven DD10 0HN
  • Job Type – 1‑year fixed contract part‑time 0.6 FTE (excluding modern languages) or 1‑year fixed contract full time (including modern languages).
  • Pay – Lathallan operates its own salary structure and pension scheme.
  • School Hours – 8:20 am–5 pm.
  • Expected Start Date – 17 Aug 2026.

  • Registration: Applicants must be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) or provide written confirmation from the GTCS of their eligibility for registration.
  • Safeguarding: The appointment is subject to a satisfactory enhanced background check and report from the PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) Scheme.
