We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Multi Skilled Technician to join our M&E team in Dochgarroch, Inverness. Using technical expertise, you will undertake PPM, inspections, breakdown response, fault investigation, repair, maintenance, and improvement works to a variety of equipment and installations throughout the canal network, both land and water based.

The role is offered on a permanent basis, and with a starting salary of £34,165 (Band D) plus 11.25% Variable Hours allowance and £850 Outdoor Working allowance. Working 35 hours per week, Monday – Friday 08:30 to 16:00, with some flexibility required. Scottish Canals offer a generous annual leave entitlement of 28 days, plus 10 public holidays, along with enhanced sick pay, discounted shopping vouchers, health cash plan and a contributory pension scheme with up to 10% employer contribution.

Primary responsibilities of the role:

  • Working within your skill set, experience, knowledge, training, and ability, deliver the agreed planned preventative maintenance schedule, new installations, carry out inspections, undertake effective fault diagnosis and repair.
  • Produce recommendations following inspection and fault investigations, undertaking minor project design and leadership where appropriate.
  • Providing inspection, monitoring, and reporting on the condition of mechanical and hydraulic assets.
  • Safely and efficiently support the delivery of improvements to the inland waterways network.
  • Provide business administration support to ensure accurate documentation and recording of all maintenance activities and duties using asset management and Microsoft office software.
  • Contribute to resource planning to assist prioritising available resource.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues, to ensure technical, health, safety, and environmental performance.
  • Participation in an out of hours standby rota as and when required.

Qualifications and knowledge required:

  • Recognised Apprenticeship (or similar level) in a Mechanical or Hydraulic discipline.
  • Minimum HNC (or equivalent) in a Mechanical or Hydraulic discipline.
  • Knowledge of other disciplines would be an advantage.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.

Skills and experience required:

  • Experience working with a multitude of the following: rotating machinery, control valves, electrohydraulic systems, instrumentation, hydraulic power units, fluid pumps, fabrication, would be an advantage.
  • Ability to work with technical drawings.
  • Experience of carrying out Fault diagnosis.

Qualities & abilities required:

  • Good Communication Skills.
  • Strong Health & Safety Awareness.
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to manage your own workload to agreed plans.
  • Computer literate with experience of using MS Office Packages.
