About the Role
We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Reservoir Surveillance Technician to join our Reservoirs Team within the Engineering Directorate, working Scotland-wide. You will support the Reservoir Technical Manager and wider Reservoirs Team in delivering statutory compliance duties under the Reservoirs (Scotland) Act 2011, alongside the inspection, monitoring and delivery of reservoir capital and revenue works. The role is offered on a permanent basis, working 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with standby participation required.
Primary responsibilities of the role:
- Carry out routine and ad-hoc reservoir surveillance inspections in accordance with statutory Section 47 and Section 50 requirements.
- Monitor, record and report reservoir condition data to support compliance with the Reservoirs (Scotland) Act 2011 and SEPA requirements.
- Prepare clear and accurate inspection notes and contribute to technical reports for review by the Reservoir Technical Manager.
- Accurately collect, analyse and upload surveillance and inspection data into Scottish Canals’ approved asset management systems.
- Support the delivery of reservoir maintenance, improvement and design projects, including checking workmanship, materials and compliance with specifications.
- Liaise with contractors, engineers, stakeholders, canal users and the public to resolve site issues and ensure works are undertaken safely and to required standards.
- Work in accordance with CDM Regulations 2015, health, safety and environmental procedures, and Scottish Canals contractor management arrangements.
- Deliver site inductions, toolbox talks and contractor briefings, highlighting reservoir-specific risks.
- Participate in standby and call-out arrangements and respond to reservoir-related incidents as required.
About the Reward
This role offers a progressive starting salary of £42,709 – £46,668 (Band E), plus standby allowance. Scottish Canals offer a generous annual leave entitlement of 32 days, plus 6 public holidays, along with enhanced sick pay, discounted shopping vouchers, health cash plan and a contributory pension scheme with up to 10% employer contribution.
About You
Qualifications and knowledge required:
- Civil Engineering or Construction Management qualification to HNC or degree level.
- IEng MICE (or equivalent) or actively working toward professional accreditation.
- Strong knowledge of civil and reservoir engineering, construction practices and environmental management in a construction context.
- Awareness of reservoir safety legislation, including the Reservoirs (Scotland) Act 2011 (desirable).
Skills and experience required:
- Strong practical understanding of reservoir and construction projects.
- Ability to interpret and scrutinise complex designs and resolve site-based conflicts.
- Experience of inspection or surveillance of civil engineering assets (desirable).
- Ability to produce and understand technical reports and analyse field data.
- Effective planning of work activities and project tasks.
- Confident interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong working relationships.
