Scottish Canals are responsible for the management and development of five Scottish canals; we are custodians of bridges, buildings, locks, The Falkirk Wheel, The Kelpies, and 19 water supply reservoirs across Scotland. We are currently seeking cheerful, positive, and outgoing people to join our seasonal team as a Canal Associate from April 2025 until October 2025.
This role is ideal for those who love nature and the outdoors, enjoy meeting new people, and want to learn new skills. You’ll meet a variety of people, experience something unique, work as part of a team, and spend time in some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country.
You will be provided with a uniform and a company mobile phone. Full training will be given through our in-house training scheme. Your duties will include engaging with the public, sharing information, answering questions, and maintaining canal safety and cleanliness.
Key Duties Include:
- Supporting the delivery of Scottish Canals\’ vision and business objectives.
- Providing excellent customer service to boating customers.
- Operating lock gates, bridges, and managing water levels.
- Maintaining accurate H&S records using digital apps on company devices.
- Using ground care equipment like mowers and strimmers for vegetation management.
- Assisting with minor maintenance using hand tools as needed.
- Keeping accurate and timely records.
- Performing manual labour following H&S guidelines.
To be successful, you should have:
- Experience in relevant operational environments such as customer service, vegetation management, or asset management.
- Basic DIY and maintenance skills.
- Effective communication skills for working with team members and the public.
- Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
- Basic computer skills, including email and Microsoft Word.
- A full driving licence.
This role offers an hourly rate of £12.13 (increasing to £12.60 from 1st April). The work involves a rolling rota, including weekends and bank holidays.
We are looking for team members to join from 10th March to 2nd November, working at various locations between Clachnaharry and Dochgarroch on the Caledonian Canal. Working hours will vary according to the season.
