An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time, temporary Assistant Building Standards Surveyor (36-month fixed term) to join Scottish Borders Council's Building Standards team. Building Standards plays a vital role in protecting public safety and improving the quality of the built environment. This post offers the opportunity to develop specialist knowledge and practical experience while contributing to a diverse range of projects across the Scottish Borders, from domestic alterations and new homes to major commercial and strategic developments.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual and applications are particularly welcomed from candidates with experience in the construction industry, including tradespeople, site managers, clerks of works, building inspectors and other construction professionals seeking a new career challenge. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a construction background who is looking to develop their career within Building Standards and local government. The post offers the opportunity to gain experience across a wide range of building projects while working alongside experienced Building Standards professionals.

Working as part of a professional and supportive team, you will assist with the delivery of Building Standards services across the Scottish Borders. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Carrying out site inspections of approved building work following the grant of Building Warrants.
  • Assessing construction work against Building Regulations and associated standards.
  • Assisting with the processing of Building Warrant applications.
  • Maintaining inspection records and electronic case files.
  • Responding to technical enquiries from householders, contractors, developers and other stakeholders.
  • Assisting with enforcement activities, including dangerous buildings work.
  • Supporting the delivery of an efficient, customer-focused Building Standards service.

Essential qualifications include HNC/HND in building or related equivalent qualification (or working towards) or substantial relevant experience. A current driving licence and use of a vehicle is an essential requirement of this post.
