  • PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES \n

To undertake tasks, which may include helping with some or all of the following, depending on the needs of the individuals: \n

  • Communication \n
  • Written tasks \n
  • Use of IT \n
  • Motor difficulties \n
  • Listening to instructions \n
  • Following instructions \n
  • Completing tasks \n
  • Mobility \n
  • Self care/personal hygiene \n
  • Toileting \n
  • Cleaning up children who have wet or soiled themselves \n
  • Social skills \n
  • Preparation of resources/materials \n
  • Supervision during intervals/lunch times \n
  • Feeding and medication (after training) \n
  • Contribute to the effective organisation and use of resources \n
  • Contribute to the quality of care and welfare of pupils \n
  • Support the needs of pupils in developing appropriate ways of relating to others \n
  • Support the pupils in re-integrating back into class from the Nurture group \n
  • KEY TASKS/DUTIES \n
  • Build up good relationships with pupils and others. Support children’s play activities – carefully listening and talking with children. \n
  • Follow teacher model of encouraging appropriate sharing, taking turns and co-operation. \n
  • Develop team work with class teacher/LS and others working with the pupils in class. \n
  • Supporting pupils in paying attention, concentrating and staying on task \n
  • Supporting children working together to encourage pair/team working \n
  • Providing support to pupils and encouraging children’s oral language through rhymes, stories, poems and personal interaction. \n
  • Helping pupils follow instructions. \n
  • Encourage appropriate behaviour by supporting the class/school ethos. \n
  • Photocopy resources. \n
  • Prepare materials as instructed by Class Teacher. \n
  • Set out and clear equipment including filing to pupil folders. \n
  • Provide relevant information for teachers for records, reports and planning. \n
  • Create displays of children’s work. \n
  • Supervising non-teaching areas e. g. corridors, playgrounds, classrooms. Supervision of children in dinner hall at lunch time. \n
  • Maintaining and cataloguing resources – library books, computer software, science and mathematical equipment \n
  • Minimize interruption to teaching time by undertaking any immediate School Assistant duties eg dealing with telephone enquiries, answering the door and passing on messages whenever the School Assistant is not available. \n

Essential\n

No formal qualifications are required, but an acceptable standard of school education is desirable.

Pupil Support Assistants will be required to undertake on the job training as and when available \n
