Job purpose

HES are offering an exciting opportunity to become a Stonemasonry Modern Apprentice. This role is designed for individuals passionate about traditional building skills, who want to begin a rewarding career in stonemasonry, construction and building conservation. The post holder will be trained full time by Alasdair Mackenzie Stonemasonry Ltd in Beauly while being an

employee of Historic Environment Scotland. This 4-year post will combine practical on-site training with structured learning, leading to a Modern Apprenticeship SCQF Level 6 Construction: Building, Stonemasonry award. This is a unique chance to contribute to the preservation of Scotland’s historic built environment whilst developing valuable trade skills in Stonemasonry.

This post is part of our Craft Your Career Traditional Skills Training Programme. This programme creates opportunities for aspiring

professionals to gain practical experience, learn from experts in their chosen field or craft, to increase their knowledge of the wider conservation sector, expand their professional network, and have access to a wide range of learning resources from the Engine Shed, Scotland’s dedicated Conservation Resource Centre in Stirling. You will be part of a wider cohort of apprentices, pre-apprentices, trainees and craft fellows who are training all over Scotland.

You will be employed and managed by HES whilst seconded out on Apprenticeship placement with a respected Stonemasonry firm based in Beauly, Scottish Highlands, You will gain hands on training and experience in the workplace to enable you to complete a Scottish Vocational Qualification in Stonemasonry whilst also attending training for your Professional Development Award at the HES Stonemasonry Skills Training Centre in Elgin.

As a Modern Apprentice in stonemasonry, you will be part of a team on live construction sites, where tasks can be physically demanding. You will need to be comfortable and able with manual labour, power/hand tools, lifting materials, and being on your feet for extended periods. The role will involve working outdoors in all weather conditions. Appropriate workwear and personal protective equipment (PPE) will be supplied.

The role will also involve regular travel to the Skills Training Centre in Elgin and occasional travel to The Engine Shed in Stirling. Although expenses will be covered by HES for this travel, willingness to travel for these visits is essential. You will also be provided with a laptop for course work and communication purposes.

Essential Requirements

  • A genuine interest in a career in stonemasonry, construction and building conservation
  • Willingness to learn and develop new skills
  • Desire to complete a SCQF Level 6 Modern Apprenticeship in Construction Building, Stonemasonry
  • Ability to work well and adapt within a team
  • Confident and able to work outdoors in a manual labour position, with reasonable adjustments considered to support individual needs where required.
  • Willingness to travel on occasion, with advance notice, to locations across Scotland

Desirable Requirements

  • Previous experience or exposure to construction
  • Basic understanding of Health and Safety at Work practices in any industry
