Job Overview
At Scottish Water, Modern Apprenticeships are designed to give you hands‑on experience from the start. As a Network Maintenance Modern Apprentice you will join the Water Response team in Inverness from December 2025. You will learn to identify, fix and prevent faults in the water network, support water mains, stop taps and meter installations, and work safely around live water supplies.
Responsibilities
- Identify and repair faults in the water network such as burst pipes, faulty valves, and damaged stop taps.
- Carry out planned maintenance on water mains and stop taps.
- Support meter installations, repairs and new water connections on development sites.
- Work safely around live water supplies in streets, public areas and homes; undertake risk assessments and follow health & safety procedures.
- Record work performed, keeping accurate and up‑to‑date logs to minimise disruption to the public.
Skills & Qualifications
- Ability to learn technical skills quickly and work independently.
- Good communication and a responsible attitude to learning and work.
- Five National 4/5s (or comparable) required; English, Maths and Science ideally but not essential.
- Driver’s licence useful, but support available to obtain one during the first year.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions; must be kitted out appropriately.
- Nationality: must be Scottish taxpayer with a home address in Scotland; commitment to move to Scotland within three months if not already living there.
What’s in it for you?
You’ll be awarded a Water Industry SVQ at SCQF Level 6. From your second year you may do an HNC in Water Operations. Starting salary £24,352 with scheduled pay increases as you reach training milestones, an annual bonus, and a pension scheme.

What you’ll need
- Be at least 17 years old by 1 Dec 2025.
- A responsible, trustworthy attitude and volunteer willingness.
- Five National 4/5s (or comparable), with English, Maths and Science specially helpful.
- Driver’s licence preferred – support available if you need to obtain one.
- Commitment to work in Scotland and move there if you’re not already living in the country.
- Willingness to undergo drug & alcohol testing in line with company policy.
- Will not need experience but we value learning ability.
