Job purpose

Reporting to a Chartered Architect/Senior Architectural Technician and/or a Lead Professional Architect/Officer, Professional Services Group 1, the successful candidate will be required to work as part of a design team producing technical designs on a variety of building projects from inception to completion.

The Specific Requirements Of The Job Are To

  • Complete a BSc in a relevant architectural course whilst working for Fife Council.
  • Each year meet the relevant competencies noted in the Role Profile and Competency Achievement Record.
  • Undertake duties (with supervision and assistance) including site surveying, site inspections, 3D modelling, design work, preparing working drawings, specifications, contract documents, technical and contract administrator’s duties as appropriate.
  • Assist with clients as part of the development of the brief and prepare feasibility studies in conjunction with a Quantity Surveyor.
  • Assist with statutory bodies as required.
  • Ensure compliance and develop knowledge of statutory legislation, regulations and industry codes of practice and standards applying to the construction process. (e.g. Town Planning Acts, Building Standards Legislation, Eurocodes, etc).
  • Assist the Chartered Architect/Senior Architectural Technician on contract administration duties.
  • Assist in controlling all contractual matters including design, specification, nomination of Sub Contractors and Suppliers, certification and expenditure of monies, working as part of a team.
  • Assist the Chartered Architect/Senior Architectural Technician in the discharge of his/her Principal Designer responsibilities under the CDM Regulations.
  • Comply with the Council’s and Property Service’s policies on Health and Safety and codes of practice.
  • Carry out other tasks within the general scope of the post as may be allocated from time to time.
  • Comply with the Council\’s Scheme of Administration and Standing Orders.
  • Contribute to the achievement of the Council’s corporate aims and values.

We have a blended home/office working model for staff but it would be expected that for the first number of months the successful candidate would be based full time in our office in Bankhead. This will be reviewed after 3 months.

As a Graduate Apprentice you will study for your Degree alongside your job, spending approximately 80% of your time in work and 20% in university. This unique combination offers an integrated experience, where practical skills and knowledge gained during the university days can be embedded in your working practices. Skills learned directly in the workplace are aligned with and can be applied to coursework and assessment.

You will study on a Graduate Apprenticeship degree programme towards a BSc (Hons) Construction & the Built Environment at Edinburgh Napier University.

Architectural Technology – You will learn key skills in areas of design and development so that you are proficient in advising on and working with innovative architecture technology. This course will help you gain a creative attitude and be skilled in detailing to design, using both graphic and computer-aided drafting techniques.

As you progress through the course, more of your job role will be used to gain credit towards your final award. This is captured in the Professional Practice modules which allow us to personalise your learning to ensure it meets your needs, those of your employing organisation and the university.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual with a positive attitude who displays an aptitude to become an Architectural Technician. The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate that they can work well with others or on their own to deliver results. They should also have an interest in keeping up to date with changes in legislation, regulation and practice which impact on their roles.

To meet our Standard Entry Requirements you must have either:

  • A HNC at Grade B in a related discipline.
  • A HND at Grade B in a related discipline.
  • Sufficient recognition of prior learning (RPL) through industry-related experience, qualifications, and informal learning. RPL applications are considered on an individual basis.

You must be able to provide proof of any qualifications stated on your CV to meet university entry requirements.
