Overview
In this Protection Field Engineer role, you will safeguard the reliability of Scotland’s transmission network and support large capital delivery projects. You will work on protection and control systems across substations and field sites, coordinating commissioning, maintenance, and outages to sustain network performance. The role sits within SSEN Transmission, contributing to the energy transition and net-zero goals. You’ll travel to multiple sites, sometimes remotely, and participate in a standby rota to meet 24/7 network needs. This is a hands-on position with a clear impact on system resilience and project delivery.

Responsibilities
- Technical management of protection and control systems to ensure high reliability of the transmission network
- Commissioning of new protection assets as part of the multi-million-pound capital delivery programme
- Support field protection activities including commissioning, maintenance, outage management, contractor liaison, and budget management
- Travel to various locations and work away from base as needed due to diverse plant locations
- Participate in paid out-of-hours standby rota due to 24/7 transmission network operations
Key requirements
- Electrical engineering qualification (minimum HNC level; apprenticeship or equivalent experience desirable)
- Experience and knowledge of power systems protection, including installation/commissioning of HV equipment up to 400kV
- Ability to read protection single line, schematic, and block diagrams
- Experience testing and fault-finding on secondary wiring and auxiliary equipment; ability to work with protection IEDs
- Full UK driving license; willingness to travel to multiple locations
- SAP or HV switching authorisations up to 400kV advantageous or being worked towards
- Effective communication with cross-functional teams
- Problem-solving and fault-finding mindset
- Ability to work in remote and varying environments
