Overview
In this Principal Engineer role, you provide technical leadership across HVDC projects, shaping standards and long-term engineering decisions. You will govern technical risk, drive supplier strategy, and represent the business in external engagements. The position blends deep HVDC expertise with governance and innovation, contributing to SSEN Transmission's mission to modernize the grid for net-zero. You will work with multiple teams to ensure robust, tested HVDC solutions and guide project proposals for fit-for-purpose outcomes.

Responsibilities
- Write and own HVDC specifications and guidance for HVDC converters and protection equipment
- Provide technical guidance for HVDC network development and fault investigations
- Lead supplier engagement and evaluation of new HVDC technologies
- Review test plans and witness tests as HVDC Technical Authority
- Input to design reviews and verify project proposals for scope and fit
- Operate as Subject Matter Expert to ensure standards compliance and identify changes
Key requirements
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
- Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartered
- Expert-level experience with HVDC design, specification, construction, operation, and maintenance
- Strong understanding of AC-HVDC interfaces and HVDC integration
- Knowledge of National Grid, British and European Standards, UK grid code, SQSS
- Experience writing technical specifications, guidance notes, and work instructions
