Overview
As Principal Engineer – Transformers, you will define technical policy and drive standards across our high‑voltage transmission network. You will own specifications for wound plant and transformers, influence industry bodies, and provide expert support to project delivery and design reviews. The role sits in Network Engineering within Asset Management and Operations, advancing a safer, more reliable grid aligned with our net zero mission. You will collaborate with cross‑functional teams and represent SSEN Transmission at industry groups, shaping transformer technology adoption. This is a technically challenging role with a clear impact on grid resilience and energy transition.

Responsibilities
- Write, maintain and own technical specifications and guidance notes for electrical wound plant (grid, HVDC, shunt/series reactors, earthing/auxiliary transformers)
- Review and update specifications based on project learnings and technology advances
- Review test plans within the Technical Authority to ensure robust testing and supplier suitability
- Witness transformer testing and conduct audits of manufacturing facilities
- Provide SME input to design reviews and support engineering colleagues
- Deliver technical consultancy across SSEN Transmission and share specialist knowledge
- Represent SSEN Transmission at industry bodies (ENA, IEC, CIGRE) and contribute to working groups
Key requirements
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartered status
- Expert-level experience in design, specification and application of transmission voltage wound plant
- Strong ability to assess issues, evaluate technical options and apply knowledge to design, installation, operation and maintenance of wound plant
- Detailed knowledge of National Grid, British and European Standards; capability to write technical specs and guidance
- Experience in manufacturing and testing of transmission voltage wound plant (advantageous)
- Strong communication and collaboration

- Stakeholder engagement and consultancy
- Design and specification of grid transformers, HVDC converter transformers, shunt/series reactors, earthing/auxiliary transformers
