Overview

In this role you will shape substation design and technical guidance to support SSEN Transmission’s net-zero network. You will work within the Network Engineering team to ensure safe, compliant, and future-ready substations across high-voltage projects. You will influence industry standards, share expertise at industry events, and mentor colleagues to raise technical capability. This is a pivotal position for delivering reliable, modern transmission infrastructure in Scotland and beyond.

Responsibilities

  • Own and update technical specifications and guidance for substation designs, including earthing systems
  • Improve specifications through lessons learned and new technologies
  • Collaborate with Civil, LV/MV, Cables and Overhead Lines, and asset management teams
  • Support the Design Authority and contribute to Technical Authority reviews for compliance and suitability
  • Represent SSEN Transmission at industry events and working groups, sharing best practices
  • Provide technical consultancy across the business and mentor peers

Key requirements

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline with Chartered Engineer status or active progress towards it
  • Strong experience in design, specification and application of transmission voltage substations
  • Ability to critically assess technical challenges and evaluate multiple solutions
  • Solid understanding of design, planning, operation and development requirements of the transmission network
  • Familiarity with SSE Transmission, National Grid, British and European Standards
  • Experience writing technical specifications, guidance notes or work instructions
  • Exposure to design, manufacturing, testing, installation or maintenance of transmission voltage plant and equipment
