Overview
As Principal Engineer – FACTS at SSEN Transmission, you will shape HVDC and FACTS technology standards across the UK grid. You’ll own technical specifications, validate supplier plans, and witness tests to ensure safe, reliable, and future-proof solutions. You’ll mentor engineers, influence national policy, and represent SSEN on industry platforms to drive grid modernization for Net Zero. Responsibilities
- Own and evolve technical specifications for HVDC and FACTS devices (STATCOM, SYNCOM, SVC, SSSC, UPFC)
- Review and validate supplier test plans; witness complex acceptance tests
- Evaluate new suppliers and technologies for safety, reliability and compliance
- Provide specialist input across the design lifecycle from concept to detailed reviews
- Challenge assumptions and refine scopes to guide FACTS and HVDC engineering
- Mentor and develop engineering colleagues to strengthen technical capability
- Represent SSEN Transmission on national/international platforms (ENA, IEC, CIGRE) and bring back best practices
Key requirements
- Degree in Electrical Engineering (or similar)
- Chartered Engineer status (or working towards it)
- Hands-on experience with FACTS & HVDC in transmission environments
- Knowledge of FACTS topics: design, equipment specs, control & protection, MMC valves or SYNCOM, maintenance and test/commissioning
- Strong ability to assess technical issues, validate solutions, and write clear technical specifications
- Solid understanding of National Grid, British/European Standards, UK Grid Code, SQSS and power quality standards
