Overview
In this role you will shape technical policy and lead the technical governance of substation electrical plant within SSEN Transmission.
You will own specifications for high‑voltage plant, act as Technical Authority on new designs, and collaborate with cross‑functional teams and industry bodies to advance compliant, safe, and future‑ready transmission projects.

Responsibilities
- Own and improve technical specifications for substation electrical plant (GIS, circuit breakers, transformers, HVDC, FACTS)
- Act as Technical Authority for new plant approvals; review designs and type testing
- Support Design Authority reviews to ensure safety, compliance and fit-for-purpose designs
- Collaborate with engineering, asset, operations, system design and manufacturers to resolve technical challenges
- Provide technical consultancy, mentor colleagues and represent SSEN Transmission in industry forums
- Represent SSEN Transmission/UK at industry events (ENA, IEC, CIGRE) and bring back insights to strengthen engineering approach
- Key requirements
- Degree in Electrical Engineering and Chartered Engineer status (or actively working towards)
- Strong experience in design, specification, testing and application of electrical plant (AIS, GIS, instrument transformers, FACTS/HVDC) at 145 k V+
- Ability to assess technical challenges and evaluate multiple solutions; understanding of transmission network design, planning, operation and development
- Knowledge of a range of national and international standards
- Experience writing technical specifications, guidance notes or work instructions
- Exposure to design, manufacturing, testing, installation or maintenance of transmission voltage plant; UK transmission experience preferred
