Overview
In this role, you help deliver large-scale transmission and substation projects that enable the UK's net zero transition. You will work within SSEN Transmission's engineering teams to develop and review underground cable designs, assess technology options, and support project life cycles from development to completion. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to manage technical and safety risks, ensuring compliant, high-quality outcomes. Responsibilities
- Provide cable engineering support across multiple projects, including outline designs and technology option assessment
- Perform current rating calculations using CYMCAP and evaluate interface requirements
- Support design development, risk sessions (HAZIDs/HAZOPs), construction, commissioning and project closure
- Develop technical scopes and specifications for new underground cable projects and modifications
- Review prequalification and type testing reports, witness factory and site acceptance tests
- Promote safety and CDM compliance across projects in line with regulations
- Collaborate with engineers and managers to mitigate risks and facilitate informed decision-making
- Conduct peer reviews of key issues and ensure quality and regulatory compliance
Key requirements
- A degree, HND or equivalent in Electrical Engineering or significant relevant industry experience
- Experience in transmission development, design and specification
- Strong knowledge of High Voltage Cable systems
- Awareness of Transmission legal and regulatory obligations (CDM & ESQCR)
- Excellent communication skills and ability to present technical information to senior stakeholders
- Ability to work with internal and external stakeholders and build relationships
- Senior level: Chartered Engineer or working towards chartered status (preferred)
