Around since 1923, SAMH is Scotland's national mental health charity. Today, we operate over 70 services in communities across Scotland, providing mental health social care support, addictions and employment services, among others. Together with national programme work in See Me, respectme, suicide prevention, and physical activity and sport, these services inform SAMH's policy and campaign work to influence positive social change. About the Role

SAMH are looking to recruit one part-time DBI (Distress Brief Intervention) Practitioner to provide Level 2 DBI support to Inverclyde residents. The service's core hours are 10am – 6pm with some weekend working on a rota basis. DBI is a non-clinical intervention, consisting of two interrelated parts:

  • Level 1 sees trained front-line staff such as Police, Ambulance and Primary Care staff help ease the person's distress, provide a compassionate response and where appropriate, involves an offer of a seamless referral, with confidence and clarity to a DBI Level 2 service.
  • Level 2 is provided by commissioned and trained third sector staff who contact the person within 24-hours of referral and provide community-based problem solving support, wellness and distress management planning, supported connections and signposting for a period up to 14 days.

The DBI Practitioner role is an exciting and challenging post which makes a real difference to people's lives. You will use your great communication skills and mature attitude to support people to achieve their identified outcomes. The role of the DBI Practitioner is to review the reasons for the individual's distress, support the person to develop immediate coping strategies, develop their Distress Brief Intervention Management Plan and link them into a range of appropriate community services and facilities.

You will have the skills to provide compassionate, connected direction and guidance to people referred to the DBI Service from Primary Care staff, Community Mental Health Teams, Police Scotland, Accident and Emergency, and Mental Health Assessment Units. Support the Team Leader/Service Manager to co-ordinate, evaluate and review this support while providing accurate data information and completed Distress Management Plans. Have the ability to communicate constructively and confidently with multiple partner agencies such as Police Scotland, NHS 24, GPs, CMHT, Ambulance Service and other Level 1 Colleagues. You will have the skills and knowledge to ensure safe and effective provision of support to those people who use the DBI service through the promotion of outcomes focused person centred approaches. Training in Level 2 Distress Brief Intervention, specific to the post, will be provided.
