Scott Fleary Productions is looking to recruit a Deputy Head of Department - Engineering. Working across theatre, television and live events, this role offers the right candidate the opportunity to help lead a highly skilled and experienced team in delivering projects to time, target and budget.
Job Purpose
To support the Head of Department and deputise in their absence in managing the Engineering Department in the construction of scenery built in metal and associated materials and maintaining an overview of departmental project schedules, while ensuring the team’s growth and wellbeing. To ensure existing processes are adhered to whilst actively identifying opportunities for improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Deputise for the Head of Engineering when required, leading the department in accurate fabrication of complex scenic elements from complex drawings to time, ensuring quality of work.
- Plan and manage departmental schedules in coordination with the Head of Engineering.
- Maintain a proactive approach to departmental health and safety and sustainability practices.
- Ensure safe use, inspection and maintenance of all departmental equipment.
- Create strong departmental cohesion and maintain high staff morale.
- Mentoring of apprentices, supporting skills development within the team.
- Lead and support on-site build teams when required.
The successful candidate will demonstrate
- Proven experience in scenic construction, architectural fabrication, or a related industry.
- Strong fabrication skills with MIG and TIG welding essential and plasma cutting experience advantageous.
- The ability to build accurate pieces from complex technical drawings and ensure the same in others.
- Extensive knowledge of materials and build techniques.
- Experience in planning and preparation for site and in leading on-site build teams.
- Previous supervisory experience is desirable.
- Comprehensive and proactive approach to workshop health and safety, and PPE compliance.
- An Engineering NVQ and coded welding qualifications are preferred.
- Excellent communication and inter-personal skills.
- Proficiency with Windows operating systems, Google Docs etc.
- A collaborative approach, organised and calm under pressure, ability to prioritise.
